Course Description

This course will provide an overview of spatial data management technology, with an emphasis on database operations and search techniques. It first introduces spatial data models and queries, and discusses the main issues of extending a database system to support geospatial data. This course will also demonstrate the ample application of spatial data management technology on a wide range of related application domains.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes

This course contributes to the program learning outcomes for the following programs:

  • BH117 Bachelor of Geospatial Science (Honours)

PLO 1: Apply advanced and coherent knowledge of theories, principles, concepts, technologies, and specialist practices in the geospatial science.
PLO 2: Critically analyse and evaluate geospatial data from different sources, standards, and governance for supporting a range of applications, using methods, tools, and technologies in the geospatial discipline.
PLO 4: Critically review and synthesize principles of geospatial science summarising current and emerging professional trends to inform evidence-based decision making and generate geospatial intelligence
PLO 5: Critically evaluate and communicate geospatial scientific and research findings to diverse audiences utilising contemporary and traditional formats employing integrity and culturally safe practices.
PLO 6: Work independently, with agility, safety, and accountability for own learning and professional future.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Explain techniques required to collect, manipulate and store geospatial data.
  2. Create a spatial database in geographic information system (GIS) to aid and facilitate management decision-making.
  3. Be able to query geographic information, attribute information, and display information that can be stored in spatial database systems.
  4. Be able to integrate different data into a format to be compared and analysed in different application domains.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course Site.

There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.
