Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Assumed Knowledge

You should have a solid understanding of cartographic and spatial science principles obtained from years 1, 2, and 3 core courses from BH117. These include GEOM1033, GEOM1044, GEOM2079.

Course Description

The science of visual analytics marries interactive visualisations with computational techniques. This course will apply visual analytical techniques to identify meaningful relationships and patterns within complex geospatial datasets. This course will also continue to build your knowledge of how users interpret and understand visual representations of geospatial data. You will implement several different visual analytics techniques to solve case study problems.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes

This course contributes to the program learning outcomes for the following programs:

  • BH117 Bachelor of Geospatial Science (Honours)

PLO 1: Apply advanced and coherent knowledge of theories, principles, concepts, technologies, and specialist practices in the geospatial science.
PLO 2: Critically analyse and evaluate geospatial data from different sources, standards, and governance for supporting a range of applications, using methods, tools, and technologies in the geospatial discipline.
PLO 4: Critically review and synthesize principles of geospatial science summarising current and emerging professional trends to inform evidence-based decision making and generate geospatial intelligence
PLO 5: Critically evaluate and communicate geospatial scientific and research findings to diverse audiences utilising contemporary and traditional formats employing integrity and culturally safe practices.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify key concepts related to visual analytics principles and methods.
  2. Apply systematic thinking and high-level visual analytical skills to solve spatial problems.
  3. Evaluate the usability of visual analytics products.
  4. Communicate, in writing and orally, current understanding of selected aspects of visual analytics.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course Site.

There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.
