Course Description

In this course you will examine the management of innovation and technology taking an interdisciplinary perspective that links engineering  with business management. Considering contemporary case studies and views from industry professionals you will develop new insights into the integration of technology strategy with business management in both large and start-up organisations. The course will explore how technology-based organisations create competitive advantage through exploitation of new technology and being innovative. Consideration and exploitation of intellectual property in the framework of ethical decision making are core pillars which you will consider in detail during the course.

This course is an option course so it is not required to contribute to the development of Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) though it may assist your achievement of several PLOs for the following programs:

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Critically review models for technology management that link innovation, entrepreneurship and business strategy in the context of an engineering / technical services organisations business plan.
  2. Propose and defend a strategic framework for managing innovation and technology in a variety of engineering scenarios for advantage.
  3. Integrate and apply key operational aspects of managing innovation and technology (including the relationship with production, marketing, R&D and human resources) to a collaborative engineering project.
  4. Recognise the humanistic and ethical imperatives of managing innovation and technology and their application to decision making.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as pre-recorded lectures lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

Prior to attending the timetabled, face-to-face sessions you will be expected to have completed the specified online activities.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the  RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

This assessment task supports CLOs 1 & 2

Assessment 2: Laboratory assessment
Weighting: 30%

Assessment 3: Take Home Individual assignment
Weighting: 20%
This assessment task supports CLOs 1-4.

Assessment 4: Team project
