Course Description

In this course you will expand upon foundational nursing knowledge and skills gained in Principles and Practice of Nursing A and Foundational Anatomy & Physiology courses. You will learn a range of patient assessment techniques to be used in conjunction with clinical reasoning. 

The course will also introduce you to a range of diagnostic procedures and nursing skills such as aseptic non-touch technique, simple wound dressings, basic life support and wound management. Content will include exploring the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards, particularly in relation to infection control risks associated with the health care environment.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will contribute to Program Learning Outcomes for BP032P24 Bachelor of Nursing through the following learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Outline nursing care skills and practice in alignment with NSQHS Standards for safety including consideration of medication management and infection control principles. 
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and skills of nursing assessment in the areas of integumentary, abdominal, musculoskeletal, cardiac, respiratory, neurovascular, and neurological assessments. 
  3. Integrate nursing investigations and assessment findings into plan of care. 
  4. Apply the clinical reasoning cycle to plan and provide care supported by evidenced based practice. 
  5. Demonstrate capacity in performing basic numeracy related to medication administration. 


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
