Course Description
This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.
Standards and ethics in nursing will encourage you to critically examine the legal and ethical frameworks that underpin the accountabilities of the Registered Nurse to promote safe person-centred practice. You will apply legal and ethical aspects of care to a range of clinical situations. Mandatory reporting, risk management, as well as other contemporary issues will be explored. The course will help strengthen your understanding of the standards for practice of the Registered Nurse (2016) and relevant regulatory guidelines.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of various governing bodies and Australian laws as they apply to nursing practice in Australia and Victoria.
- Evaluate contemporary ethical and legal issues arising in nursing practice.
- Apply the code of conduct, code of ethics and duty of care and how these relate to patient and professional safety.
- Examine the principles of delegation to other members of the health care team whilst working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team.
- Identify principles of risk management in health care and issues relating to quality and safety.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
