Course Description

In this course you will explore biopsychosocial factors and nursing care influencing individuals, children, gender identity and older adult responses to complex health conditions. You will develop an advanced understanding of variations of health and apply knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan. Applying a broad understanding of variations, common childhood illnesses, adolescent health, malignancy, assisted living using evidence-based guidelines and frameworks. You will focus on diversity and challenge assumptions of 'normal.'

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. Identify biopsychosocial factors that may influence the experience of health and illness at different stages of growth and development across the lifespan.  
  2. Apply evidence-based knowledge to nursing care of children, adolescents, and older adults experiencing health variations. 
  3. Analyse and communicate the impact of variations of diversity of age, gender, sexual identity, culture, indigeneity and how they influence the health of people. 
  4. Examine key variations to lifespan, of common childhood illnesses, malignancy and assisted living, using evidence-based guidelines and frameworks.  


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures, discussions and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will be able to work both independently and in groups to aid development of your theoretical knowledge and its application to clinical practice. 

Learning activities may include modalities including  workshops and online learning. 

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through RMIT Student Website.
