Course Description

This course is identified by RMIT University as a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which knowledge and skills will be practiced within the university simulated health environment, and applied and assessed in a clinical workplace context, as feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your professional experiences. 

This course focuses on preparation for professional practice. It will also include a practice job interview developing a CV, career advice and information supporting application for a graduate year.  You will undertake supervised simulation-based learning opportunities within the simulated health environment and complete supervised professional placement/s in a prearranged health care setting for a prescribed period of time.  

You will work with a Registered Nurse in the healthcare team to continue building on nursing skills acquired in preceding and current semesters with the view to transitioning to a beginning practitioner.  

You will work towards providing nursing care for 3- 4 resident/patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, developing independent and critical thinking skills required for time management and prioritisation of nursing care. 

You must meet a number of Immunisation and Compliance requirements upon commencement of studies in the program and before attempting above WIL courses: 

  •     Immunisation and vaccination requirements:  A full course of immunisations can take up to 7 months to complete, you should contact your medical practitioner prior to entering the program to commence immunisations. It is a requirement that you will have commenced all immunisations and will continue to progress this until completion of the vaccination courses by the deadlines set by the university. 
  •     Police Check: Students must present evidence of a successful National Police Records Check prior to undertaking the clinical components of this program (Annual requirement for the duration of your Program). National Police records check are conducted via fit2work. An account with fit2work will be created using the student’s name and the RMIT issued student email address, once studies in the program have commenced. Further information will be provided once enrolment has been completed. 
  •     Working with Children Check (valid for 5 years): Students must hold a valid Working with Children Check prior to undertaking the clinical components of this program. 
  •     NDIS Worker Screening Check:  You may be required to apply for and receive an acceptable NDIS Worker Screening Check prior to undertaking professional placement with an NDIS provider as part of this program. Further information will be provided once enrolment has been completed. 
  •     COVID19 Vaccination: You will be required to undertake COVID19 Vaccination as part of this program. Further information will be provided once enrolment has been completed. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will contribute to Program Learning Outcomes for BP032P24 Bachelor of Nursing through the following learning outcomes: 

PLO1. Demonstrate a breadth and depth of nursing knowledge and concepts in a variety of real-world settings using an evidence-based approach

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: 

  1. Employ within the scope of practice of a beginning third year nursing student incorporating pre-registration behaviours and attitudes that reflect the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice.  
  2. Distinguish appropriate and confident and competent written, verbal and non-verbal communication skills that are culturally intelligent with patients, significant others and the multidisciplinary health care team. 
  3. Relate clinical reasoning and critical thinking to accurately, plan, implement and evaluate person centred care in collaboration with the Registered Nurse, considering time management and prioritisation of nursing care. 
  4. Analyse and apply legislation for nursing practice to ensure quality, safety and ethical standards are upheld. 
  5. Illustrate the role of the registered nurse in differing contexts with emphasis on leadership and decision making.  
  6. Demonstrate the ability to effectively reflect and evaluate your performance and behaviour incorporating resilience, adaptability, self-awareness and self –care at a third-year student level.  


Overview of Learning Activities

This course is a Work Integrated Learning course that will be conducted in the healthcare setting. You will be required to undertake a minimum of 160 hours of supervised nursing practice in a designated healthcare setting under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. As support and preparation for this WIL experience there will be university-based clinical preparation time allocated throughout the semester as a timetabled learning experience. 

You will actively participate in patient care within the university simulated health environments and as part of the health care team during all WIL experiences. 

This course will consist of 6 hours of lectorials and 8 hours clinical laboratories, this includes 6 hours of simulation-based learning.     

Independent Learning: In line with the professional responsibility for active life-long learning you are expected to undertake self-directed learning activities during this time to develop and consolidate knowledge obtained during the WIL experience. 

The activities associated with this course are designed to enable you to build on theoretical learning from preceding and current semesters, consolidate and apply the clinical skills and knowledge in a supported university and supervised clinical setting/s.  

RMIT has state of the art simulated learning facilities for student learning and practice. You will participate in simulated practice within these facilities in preparation for placement. As a part of participation, you may be filmed for learning, teaching, reflection and assessment and this is considered an inherent part of our learning and teaching program. Recordings will be maintained in accordance with our assessment, document retention and privacy policies. 

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course Site.

Overview of Assessment

All assessments are required to be completed for a pass mark in this course. This clinical course awards a pass or fail mark. 

This course contains hurdle requirements. All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning Teaching & Quality).
