Course Description

This course has been designed to introduce you to the key aspects of pharmacy practice. After successfully completing the course, you should be able to provide care to patients with minor health conditions (under the supervision of a registered pharmacist).  During your study, you will learn how drugs and dosage forms work within the body, the mechanisms by which drugs are controlled, and how to assess and advise patients presenting with minor health conditions. You will also be introduced to the frameworks that control the work of the Pharmacy profession.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. Explain how therapeutic molecules are packaged into different dosage forms to facilitate their activity within the body.  
  2. Assess and advise patients presenting with simple self-limiting health conditions, making appropriate recommendations for their treatment or referral.  
  3. Describe the different frameworks that control the use of medicines and the practice of pharmacy within Australian society  
  4. Accurately undertake pharmaceutical calculations associated with dosages and pharmaceutical compounding. 


Overview of Learning Activities

 

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both. 

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
