Course Description

This course provides foundational knowledge of the key principles and concepts that underpin the teaching of health and physical education in early childhood and primary school settings. It will equip you with the critical skills in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in health and physical education. You will develop your knowledge and practice in adopting learner-centric instructional approaches within a games-based framework for the planning, teaching and evaluating of health and physical education. Through this course, you will work collaboratively with peers to learn these foundational skills. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following BP320P24 Bachelor of Education (Primary) and BP320PEC24 Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood Education) Program Learning Outcomes: 

PLO1. Develop and demonstrate broad and coherent theoretical and practical knowledge through one or more of the following practices: planning using data; teaching and learning; assessing; feedback and professional judgement; and appraising impact of teaching across a range of disciplines.  

PLO3. Support students to develop the skills needed to become collaborative, problem-solving, creative learners with agency, and innovative and engaged members of society.  

PLO6. Apply initiative, judgement, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which may include the use of new technologies and teaching tools, to enhance your practice and to provide growth opportunities for students. 


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

1.  Apply pedagogical expertise of effective Physical Education and Sport teaching practices in a small group setting.  1.1, 4.2 
2.  Apply and evaluate inclusive and engaging student-centred learning approaches to develop lesson plans across a range of health and physical education curriculum content   3.1, 4.1 
3.  Use classroom management techniques to provide feedback, manage challenging behaviour and to foster a safe learning environment for students in health and physical education contexts  3.5, 4.3, 5.2, 6.3 
4.  Develop a range of teaching strategies to enhance teaching practice including the design and modification of creative games and the use of ICT in relevant HPE settings.    2.1, 2.6, 3.3

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as workshops, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Teaching and learning may be face to face, online, or a combination of both.
