Course Description
In the current business environment, Information Systems are at the heart of virtually every business interaction, transaction, process, and decision. Information technologies such as big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, the internet of things, mobile computing, and commerce have brought information systems to an entirely new level within firms, and between individuals in their personal lives. This course aims to provide insights into how Information Systems and aforementioned information technologies are driving innovation, new business models, hyper-competition, and digital business transformation by covering the following key areas:
- Business value of enterprise information systems
- Business analytics and informed decision-making
- Data and information management and
- Management of security, privacy, and ethical issues in information systems
Throughout the course, you will engage in case studies, group projects, and practical exercises to apply your knowledge and skills to real-world business scenarios. By the end of the course, you will be equipped with sought-after business and technical skills that play an important role in assisting organisations to make the most out of modern information and communication technologies.
This course will also introduce an industry e-portfolio where you will compile and curate your class activities and assessment tasks to develop a compelling professional identity to demonstrate your autonomy, judgment and responsibility in conducting, reporting and reflecting on the opportunities to engage with industry projects.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
CLO1. Analyse and apply the fundamental concepts and business value of Information Systems.
CLO2. Evaluate and apply Information Systems management theories and models to conceptualise business value.
CLO3. Critically analyse enterprise Information Systems and their role in data-driven decision-making.
CLO4. Appraise the ethical, legal, and social implications of Information Systems in business and the management of security and privacy concerns.
CLO5. Collaborate in teams to critically examine the role of Information Systems in managing and sustaining digital transformation and make recommendations to senior management in the enterprise.
CLO 6. Develop and curate a personalised ePortfolio that effectively communicates your identity as a global professional, showcasing your skills, achievements, and experiences.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course is designed to encourage active learning through a variety of in-class and online activities. You will be engaged in both individual and group work through quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; and producing written work.
To facilitate your learning, the course will be led by tutorial discussion and leadership, which will provide guidance and support as you work through the course materials. In addition, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with your peers on prescribed research tasks or projects, which will allow you to develop your teamwork and business communication skills.

Various learning resources are available online through the RMIT Learning Hub (Canvas). These include seminar slides, assessment details, links to relevant internet information, readings and communication tools to facilitate collaboration with your peers.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or in online forums through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation. All three assessment tasks will include a learning reflection and peer assessment element.
