Course Description

This is an intensive course that focuses on developing your knowledge of communication practices within local, national or global contexts. The experiences in this course will enable you to explore the nature of communication practices and organisations within these diverse contexts.  

In this course you participate in a study tour where you will visit a region to provide your firsthand insight into communication practices by visiting different organisations operating within a range of sectors. This will allow you to contextualise your experience of communication organisations and practices while broadening your perspectives of the industry. This will help to inform your future career and study options. 

 

All participants in the study tour must enrol in this course. 

Please note that course enrolment fees do not include tour costs. Refer to the Course Coordinator for details of your preferred tour including itinerary; travel and accommodation costs; tour costs and deadlines. 

 
Prior to the departure of each tour there will be a series of preparatory meetings and administrative tasks. Your full participation is expected in these activities. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following Bachelor of Professional Communication (BP354) program learning outcomes:  

  • PLO1: Practice professional communication in diverse contexts while actively contributing to a more sustainable world and engaging with First Nations and globally inclusive perspectives 
  • PLO2: Collaborate respectfully with diverse stakeholders, both locally and globally, to problem solve within and across a range of professional contexts  


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. Critically compare and contrast communication practices from different contexts  
  2. Explain the similarities and differences of communication practices in different contexts 
  3. Discuss the complexity of, and interrelationships between professionals engaged within communication industries. 
  4. Critically reflect on the range of practices employed within communication industries and discuss how these practices could influence your career development 


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities in this course are designed to enable you to apply your developing knowledge and skills and include workshops, practical study, site visits and web administered learning materials. 

 
The study tour is conducted as an intensive 5 – 7 day study period. You will be guided in your learning through readings, classes, site visits, workshops with industry representatives and academics and your own exploration of particular technical and economic aspects of the cities/regions you visit. You will work with your peers in groups as well as undertake your own independent learning. 

 
You will also engage in classes and on line material prior to the study tour. These will include discussion of readings as well as confirmation of the itinerary and suggested sites for group and individual investigation.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of: 
 
Assessment Tasks 

Assessment Task 1: Report - communication industry in context (Individual), 30% weighting [linked CLOs; 1, 2 ,3]  
Assessment Task 2: Journal (Individual), 30% weighting. [linked CLOs; 2 ,3 & 4] 
Assessment Task 3: Reflective Narrative - experience informing career (individual), 40% weighting [linked CLOs; 1, 2, 3 & 4] 
 
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
