Course Description

The Social Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development course is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to create sustainable solutions to social and environmental challenges. The course covers the principles and practices of social entrepreneurship, sustainable development, and impact investing, and provides opportunities for students to apply these concepts in practical settings.

The course introduces you to the concept of social entrepreneurship and its role in creating positive social and environmental impact. It covers the principles of sustainable development, including environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and economic viability, and explores how these principles can be applied to business practices. The course also examines the role of impact investing in promoting sustainable development and social impact.

By the end of the course, you will have gained the skills and knowledge to create sustainable solutions that address social and environmental challenges and to lead change for sustainable development and social impact in their future careers.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1 Reflect on the principles and practices of social entrepreneurship and sustainable development.

CLO2 Critically analyse the role of social entrepreneurship in sustainable development and develop strategies to address poverty, climate change, and inequalities.

CLO3 Analyse the challenges and opportunities of social entrepreneurial ventures and examine their impact on local, and international communities. In the Australian offerings, this includes opportunities and challenges that facilitate Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander People knowledge in Australia.

CLO4 Evaluate the social, environmental, and economic impacts of sustainable development, and explore the potential for social entrepreneurship to create positive change.

CLO5 Develop effective communication and collaboration skills, including stakeholder engagement, partnership building, and community involvement, to facilitate the development and implementation of socially responsible and sustainable business model.


Overview of Learning Activities

In this course a variety of teaching approaches will be used including the use of reflection, case studies, small group work and critical discussion. You will be encouraged to be an active learner and your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work.

Throughout the course you will receive feedback in the form of guidance and constructive academic critique of the artefacts you will develop. This feedback will be provided in assessment tasks to ensure that you are on the right track and that any issues are addressed promptly. Overall, this course will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a business environment that is increasingly focused on sustainability and social responsibility.
