In this unit of competency you will develop a learning plan and maintain a portfolio that will support your future plans and goals.

Details of Learning Activities
This unit is part of Certificate III in EAL (Further Study). You will study this unit with other units on the same day. Your program consists of Face to Face teaching and Directed Study. Your program will have a minimum of 8 hours directed study a week. You are not required to attend classes to complete the Directed Study, however, you are expected to complete all work given and will at times be required to show evidence that the work has been completed. An outline of your Directed Study is published each week in the Weekly Program Delivery Plan.
The Weekly Program Delivery Plan is a detailed outline of what activities you will be undertaking in each session on a weekly basis. You can access this via Canvas at the start of each teaching week. This unit will run for 10 weeks of the program from Weeks 4-13.

There are no set texts in this course, but it is recommended that you bring:
- English-English dictionary (we ask that you do not use a translation dictionary)
- Thesaurus
- Display folder with plastic sleeves
- Highlighter pens
- Notebook or loose leaf paper
- Headphones (use your own or they can be purchased from the Carlton Library very cheaply)
- USB (Memory stick)
- Laptop (if you have one)
- A4 Plastic folder with A4 plastic pockets (for Assessment Task 10)
Teacher will provide handouts and resources during class time. You can locate these resources on Blackboard and Facebook.
Overview of Assessment
This course is part of a full-time integrated program. You must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of the competencies in order to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.
You will be assessed by the following:
A learning plan and portfolio.
A reflective journal.
Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.

Assessment Task 1: Develop a Learning Plan and Portfolio (Session 4)
This is an ongoing task for to identify learning goals, weak areas in language and resources to addresses the areas. It encourages self-reflection by analysing learning styles and identifying opportunities for skills development and setting and maintaining study goals. The evidence of weekly reflection on the learning and progress should be documented. The evidence should be collected and presented in a portfolio.
Assessment Task 3: Mid-Semester Interview and Portfolio of Evidence (Session 5)
A formal interview between teacher and student to discuss a variety of matters such as attendance, assessment tasks, further study options, progress and other issues including presentation of a portfolio of evidence.
Formative assessments: ongoing observations, summaries and review of student work

Assessments tasks will include other courses (Units of competency) from the program.
Assessment Task 11: Reflective Learning Journal
A weekly journal which to reflect on all classes and working towards achieving learning goals.
The weekly learning journal should include the following:
- Writing about your weekly learning experiences (activities you have done in class or at home – self-directed study)
- Things you need to work on that were covered in class
- What you are doing to improve your English learning
- Note any resources you have used in class or at home
- What homework tasks you were given this week and have you completed them?
- You must include some of your best pieces of written work to collect
- Learning portfolio checklist (session 10)

Assessment Matrix
Each assessment cover sheet clearly outlines the competencies being addressed in the task in relation to performance criteria. The sum of assessment tasks will cover all units and their elements over a range of occasions. You will be given opportunities to demonstrate competency in a variety of ways throughout the program. To successfully complete this unit you will need to demonstrate that you are competent in each element of the unit/subject on at least two occasions.
