Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and appropriately handle woven, knitted and non-woven fabrics and other textile materials and accessories used in the textiles, clothing and footwear industries. Accessories may include items such as threads, fastening and trims.

In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge to identify fibres and fabrics commonly used in the construction of garments and accessories.

This includes identifying a wide range of fibres and fabrics used in the clothing industry. Fibres include natural and synthetic, and fabrics include knitted, woven and non-woven.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the course and will include five assessments or projects. Assessments will be in the form of tests for underpinning knowledge and demonstration and observation of your ability to identify fibres and fabrics, describe fabric construction processes and qualities of fabric plus determining the uses of fabrics.
