Course Description

In this unit students will develop skills and knowledge required to identify and work within the legal and ethical frameworks that apply to an individual job role.

Details of Learning Activities

Classes are delivered during face to face workshops (subject to Government restrictions due to Covid 19) During classes, information is shared through talks and discussions.  Workshops will take place, with exercises will be conducted to apply learning.

Time is spent during classes for students to work on group assessment tasks. In your own time, you will be expected to keep up-to-date with the readings and videos that will be made available to you on Canvas. The classes, readings and videos will prepare you to be able to complete your course assessments.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment task 1 - Case Study

This assessment task has 2 activities They are:

  1. Case Study
  2. Email

Activity 1 Case Study

  1. Access a copy of your workplace code of conduct/code of ethics (there is an example Code of Conduct document here: Code of Conduct_example.pdf  Download Code of Conduct_example.pdf)
  2. Read the case study.
  3. Answer 9 short-answer questions about the case study using your workplace code-of-conduct to guide you

Activity 2 Email

  1. Write a (simulated) email to your supervisor outlining the action that could be taken to improve the organisations response to legal and ethical issues about privacy and confidentiality in the scenario.
  2. Your email must suggest 2 improvements, that could be made to privacy and confidentiality practices, to better meet legal and ethical workplace requirements.
Assessment task 2- Placement Portfolio

In this task you are required to use a range of documents from a simulated workplace called Latrobe Valley Community Health, which provides a variety of services to a diverse range of people to complete a series of reflection questions along with a policy task to demonstrate your understanding of how to work legally and ethically.

There are three tasks that need to be completed which are; Task 1 – DocumentsYou are required to access a range of documents relevant to youth work. See the list under task 1 section. If you are unable to collect any of the documents speak with your trainer in class.

Task 2 – Reflective Questions You are required to use your reflective thinking skills about the experiences you have had engaging withyoung people (at work or in your personal life) and what you have learnt in class.

Task 3 – Policy developmentYou are required to select a policy from you the documents in Task 1 to identify any improvements that could be made – once you have identified the improvements prepare an email for your ‘manager’ clearly outlining the improvements that need to be made to the policy and why.

Assessment task 3- Online Quiz

This short-answer assessment task is one of three assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be marked competent for this unit. This assessment task allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of working legally and ethically in the youth work sector.
