Course Description
In this course you will learn the skills and knowledge required to interpret a prescribed request for a dental radiographic image. It also includes the preparation of the patient for dental radiography and the selection of equipment requirements.
This course addresses the following units of competency:

As part of this course, you are required to be mentored and supervised by a qualified licenced dental practitioner in your workplace.
Workplace delivery and/or assessment
Production of intraoral and extraoral radiographic images must be compliant with current State or Territory radiation licensing requirements. Where licensing requirements preclude the operation of extraoral equipment by Dental Assistants, all performance evidence may be collected via production of intraoral radiographic images.
In this course your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a workplace context.
Assessment must ensure:
- access to suitable facilities, equipment and resources including:
- barrier protection materials
- dental chair and unit
- radiographic equipment suitable for taking intraoral or extra-oral radiographs
practitioner, patient and assistant protective equipment
- processing equipment
- radiographs or sensors
- current Dental Board of Australia (DBA) and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) guidelines and practice standards
- modelling of industry operating conditions including access to people for simulations and scenarios in dental assisting work
Assessment must involve demonstration of tasks under verbal or written prescription from a dental practitioner.
When seeking work experience elsewhere apart from your clinic, you will need to complete the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) documentation. Your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a workplace context and the feedback from industry and/or community will be integral to your experience.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral presentations, and through the application of learned skills and insights to your written tasks. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS.
Assessment Tasks
Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency.
To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.
To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

ASSESSMENTS:
Assessment Task 1: Dental Anatomy Knowledge Assessment
This is an open book assessment scheduled to be completed in class via Collaborate Ultra. This assessment will assist you in understanding and interpreting the geometric and visual qualities of the radiographs. Feedback will be provided via Grade Centre on Canvas and discussed verbally if required.
Assessment Task 2: Intraoral Simulated Practical Assessment
This assessment will be conducted in the same week when you attend the Intraoral clinical practice sessions (as per the group allocation).
This is a simulated assessment in the Level 3 Sim Lab involving all three techniques- Bisecting, Paralleling and Bitewing technique. Only after completing all components of this assessment task will you be permitted to take radiographs on real patients under direct supervision of your workplace mentor.
To undertake a practical clinical assessment (simulationMUST present for the assessment process as follows:
Check that gowns, coats and undershirts worn by clinical staff have short sleeves (no shorts, jeans or tracksuit pants, no bare midriff, no singlet tops).
- Shoes are closed in so they protect from dropped objects, they should be non-slip and easy to clean.
- Long hair must be tied back and covered (e.g., with a disposable cap or hair net)
- Ensure that fingers, hands, and wrists are free of items that retain micro-organisms or hinder hand hygiene.
- Ensure that nails are kept short and natural, without coatings.
If you are non-compliant with any of the above requirements, you will not be permitted to undertake practical exercise or assessment at the scheduled time, resulting in the assessment being rescheduled.
You will receive a witten and verbal feedback on this assessment.
Assessment Task 3: Patient Case Study
You will be presenting the Challenging patient experienced during your workplace training. The presentation will need to be approximately 5 minutes long and presented in front of the group. Criteria for this assessment will be available on CANVAS. Outcome/feedback will be provided via Grade Centre on Canvas and will also be discussed verbally if required.
Assessment task 4: Intraoral Patient Portfolio & Work Legislation Report
You are required to produce a Portfolio of 30 diagnostic intraoral radiographs during your clinical practice at their workplace. Each radiograph submitted must have a Critique sheet attached as part of this assessment. The work legislation report is also required to be submitted. Students will receive feedback on via CANVAS. Please note this assessment task is a pre-requisite to the final Workplace assessment.
Assessment Task 5: Knowledge Assessment
This will be conducted under supervision via online Collaborate Ultra. To achieve a Satisfactory result, student must complte all questions of this assessment task successfully.
Feedback to students will be provided via CANVAS.
Assessment Task 6: Workplace Assessment
This is conducted after the last day of attendance and prior to the enrolment end date. You will be assessed on three different intraoral exposures prescribed by licenced and qualified dental practitioners. Detailed information on assessment criteria will be explained during the class attendance. The allocated assessor will contact the student for discussion and scheduling of the suitable time for this assessment. Student knowledge and skills will be observed in the workplace according to assessment criteria provided in assessment document.
Students will receive a verbal feedback on this assessment.
Assessment Task 7: Extraoral Simulated Practical Assessment
This assessment will be conducted on the same day of student attendance for practical Extra Oral session (as per the group allocation). This is a simulated assessment in the Level 3 Sim Lab involving exposure to Extra Oral (OPG & Lat Ceph). You will be observed in patient positioning and will also be required to produce 2 (OPG) Extraoral radiographs and 1 Lat Ceph during their simulated practice at RMIT. Each Panoramic radiograph submitted must have a Critique sheet attached as part of this assessment.
Only after successful completion of this assessment students will be permitted to proceed with taking Panoramic extraoral radiographs on real patients under direct supervision of their workplace mentors/supervisors.
Assessment criteria and further information will be discussed with students during their attendance to lectures, as well as practical session.

Assessment Task 8: Extraoral Patient Portfolio & Knowledge Reflection
You are required to produce a Portfolio of 10 extraoral radiographs (OPG's) during their clinical practice at your workplace. Each extraoral radiograph submitted must have a Critique sheet attached as part of this assessment.
The second part of this assessment task is a Report based on questions required to be researched and must be submitted with the Portfoilo.
Students will receive written feedback on this assessment.
