Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish relationships, clarify needs, and then work collaboratively with people who are living with mental health issues.

This unit applies to support workers in contexts outside the mental health sector, but who come into contact with people with mental health issues. The services and support provided are not mental health specific.

Details of Learning Activities

During face-to-face classes, information is shared through talks and discussions, and workshops where exercises are conducted to apply learning. Time is spent during classes for students to work on developing plans, researching community sector issues and service providers, presenting resources and reports.

Overview of Assessment

This unit is part of an integrated program. You must demonstrate critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit. 


Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks. You may be assessed by: 
• Oral or written questioning 
• Oral presentations 
• Assignments and projects 
• Direct observation of work practice 

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation. 

Regular attendance is necessary.

Assessment Tasks

There are three assessment tasks for this unit:

Assessment 1: Role Play and Client Documentation. Students will be required to complete two (2) roles plays with 2 different clients to demonstrate your skills working with a client who has a mental health issue and is in distress. skills in establishing respectful relationships with people with mental health issues, determining their needs, and working with them to meet their aspirations and needs.  Students are also required to complete written task associated with working with clients.

Assessment 2: Role Play and Client Documentation. Students will be required to complete one (1) role play with a client  to demonstrates your skills working with a client who has a mental health issue and is in distress. Students are also required to complete written task associated with working with the client. 

Assessment 3: Students are required to provide written responses to fifteen (15) questions to demonstrate knowledge of common mental health issues and the key issues facing people with mental health issues.  

You will be given two (2) attempts for each assessment to demonstrate the required knowledge and skills. A third (3rd) attempt can only be offered after discussions between teacher and the Program Coordinator and is not automatic. Resubmissions beyond two (2) attempts are at the discretion of the teacher and/or coordinator.
