Course Description
This course is designed to give you the skills and knowledge required to perform industrial sewing on textile products.
The unit applies to sewing work using an industrial sewing machine. Sewing operations may be performed to repair or finish textile products using a single machine on a limited range of fabrics and textile products.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge to demonstrate competency in the above elements.This course is a workshop based course. Students will undetake a number of technical exercises that enable them to perform industrial sewing.
Details of Learning Activities
This course is delivered in a simulated work environment
Demonstrates skills and knowledge to:
• check work against job specifications and workplace practices
• prepare workstation and work before commencing sewing operations
• apply sewing techniques
• apply OH&S practices in work operations
• maintain accurate records

Discuss Student Learning Guides Equipment List; Introduction to OH&S Blackboard • Task 1: Marking and sewing long band (without thread) • Task 2: Endless band (½ foot and foot width sewing) with thread x1 • Task 3: Endless band (stopping on a line with 5mm back tack) with thread x1 |

Week 2 | • Task 4: Vilene Lines (sew /clip/ turn) x2 • Task 5: Unmarked lines (sew /clip/ turn / sew on a calico square) with thread x2 Demonstration of the Overlock machine and threading to small group whilst others continue tasks above. • Task 6 Students working in pairs threading and testing Overlocking stitch Make samples of right & wrong side of Overlocking stitch Overlock Square x2 Overlock chaining (both sides and clip) x2 • Task 7 Joining stitch (using narrow/short band) x2 Straight seam open (using narrow/short band) x2 Straight seam closed (using narrow/short band) x2 (all seams 1cm seam allowance and overlock neatened) |

Overview of Assessment
Assessment is ongoing throughout the course and students will be asked to demonstrate their competency. Assessment will be done by observation and by questioning by the assessor. Assessment tasks have been designed to measure competency in a flexible manner. To achieve successful completion of this course students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency.
Students will be awarded a grade only if competency has been demonstrated within the standard enrolment period on the first assessment attempt.
Units assessed as ‘not yet competent’ on a first assessment attempt and ‘competent’ on a second or subsequent attempt are to have results amended to competent but are not eligible for grading.
All work must be submitted by the due date.
Late submission will not be graded higher than a PASS.

Other Information
It is an OHS requirement that students must wear flat fully covered shoes in the workshops.
NO SANDALS OR THONGS
Long hair should be tied back and Jewelley that could pose a possible hazard must be removed.
