Course Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge you will require to construct burn-out patterns for cast metal framework; and devest, trim, treat, finish and evaluate alloy structures. The metal frameworks that you construct would be used in industry as the sub structure of a removable partial denture for a patient. The metal structures you fabricate are created from Cobalt Chrome and are incredibly strong, thus making them the perfect framework fro a denture.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course you will be able to demonstrate, on a consistent basis, the process undertaken to adapt a prescription drawing of a partial denture framework design into a tangible dental appliance. You will develop the skills adaptable to a range of situations to suit the needs of various patients and clinicians to provide successful dental treatment.

Teaching Schedule
The class is scheduled for delivery to the APPRENTICE group (DT3) and NON-APPRENTICE GROUP (FT2) on Tuesday March 17 in the Lecture theatre of Building 154 RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne) Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change.
Following the delivery of the theory class, practical exercises will be undertaken in the laboratory.
Class schedules are detailed in the timetables provided on Blackboard (subject to change at the discrection of RMIT, in this event notification will be provided to your student email);
- DT3 - Monday - Friday (2 week block)
- FT2 - Tuesday - Wednesday
Practical classes will be delivered in the simulated environment at RMIT where the Teacher will provide demonstration and assistance as you construct the following appliances.
- Cobalt Chrome Framework (Wax-up) Mx & Md
- Cobalt Chrome Framework (Cast & Finish)
- You will be required to wax up both frameworks in case one of the frameworks does not cast into metal correctly. The process of constructing and finishing the cobalt chrome denture framework is very time consuming and as this is the case you will only have time to complete one case. If time permits within the course you will have an opportunity to cast the second waxed - up framework.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions.
You will be assessed on both the essential knowledge and the demonstration of essential skills through;
Completion of practical exercises - including detailed self reflection of each exercise

Theory exam
Assessment Tasks
You will attempt the following practical exercises under supervision of the teacher and you will be graded with either a Px (Satisfactory) or NYC (Not Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines outlined in the practical exercise book; in accordance with the training package elements & essential skills.

Upon completion of an exercise and prior to submission for assessment, all exercises undertaken in the practical classes will require you to provide a detailed reflection of your own work focussing on areas of the appliance that were successful as well as areas that could be improved upon next time.
The theory exam will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions.
- Metallurgy - Theoretical examination - pass mark 60%
Assessment Matrix
To achieve a grade of CA (Competency Achieved) for the unitHLTDT509D/DENT5786C Construct cast metal alloy removable partial denture framework you are required to obtain a pass result (PX or CA) for the following theoretical and practical assessments that are used to measure; elements, performance criteria, essential knowledge and essential skills as outlined in the health training package.
- Metallurgy - Theoretical examination - pass mark 60%
Failure to complete any of the above listed tasks/assessments will result in an NYC (not yet competent) result for unit HLTDT509D/DENT5786C Construct cast metal alloy removable partial denture framework. An NYC (not yet competent) result will be entered in the student record. This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence requiring re-enrolment incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment.
The scheduled dates for the assessments are as follows;
Apprentice DT3: Tuesday June 2nd (The assessment process must be finalised and a result entered by July 1st 2015)
Non-Apprentice FT2: FridayJune 26th (The assessment process must be finalised and a result entered by July 1st 2015)

Non completion or non-submission of compulsory tasks:
Failure to complete any or all of the compulsory tasks listed above will prevent the student from achieving a CA (competency achieved) result for unit HLTDT509D/DENT5786C Construct cast metal alloy removable partial denture framework. This will result in the student not completing the unit successfully. NYC (not yet competent) will be recorded and re enrolment will be required to continue the unit/program. Fees will be incurred. Please note: A second opportunity for assessment will not be granted unless the student has applied for and been granted special consideration as per RMIT assessment policy.

To undertake practical exercises and /or assessment students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

In appropriate practical class attire (Protective clothing for legs - if shorts, must cover knees, lab coat, safety glasses)
Fully covered in leather(not suede) footwear
Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
No artificial fingernails to be worn
The wearing of henna is acceptable.
Short, clean fingernails (no nail polish)
No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape
All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing
A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake practical exercises or assessment at the scheduled time. The student will be rescheduled to undertake assessment at a later date.
