Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to lead assessment processes as a part of a continuous improvement strategy among a group of assessors within a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

It applies to experienced assessors who provide leadership, or guidance to others, who conduct assessments for an RTO.

Session 1 - July 6

Topic 1

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is an integral part of the Australian Education system and is designed to deliver workplace specific skills and knowledge based competencies.  As a team leader, you have responsibility to stay up to date with issues, develop and extend your own skills and knowledge, and provide mentoring support to your team in their professional development.

In this topic, you will learn how to develop your own expertise by identifying current trends in assessment practice. 

We will cover:

  • Issues of interest to the VET Assessment Professional
  • Maintaining currency
  • Researching and contributing to the VET sector

 

Topic 2

In this topic, we look at the foundations of assessment and how they inform the role of the assessor.  Work through each learning outcome to assist with your understanding around the assessment process, the role and rules surrounding assessment, your role as an assessor and student rights within the assessment process.  During this topic you will learn how to identify considerations in determining high standards of assessment. 

We will cover:

  • What is assessment
  • Principles of assessment and rules of evidence
  • Effective assessment methods
  • The assessor's role
  • Appeals and grievances
  • Assessment systems
  • Assessment processes
  • Legal and ethical responsibilities

 

Session 2 - July 13

Topic 3

During this session you will learn how to design high quality assessments by identifying the most effective assessment strategy, plans and tools for a range of purposes. 

We will cover:

  • Assessment plans and their components
  • Assessment methods, purposes, and applications
  • Assessment design and development

 

Topic 4

The continuous improvement process is an integral part of ensuring quality within an organisation.  Those practitioners who work in supervision roles are required to drive the continuous improvement process and lead their teams to a higher standard of assessment practice.  During this topic you will learn how to monitor assessment leading to improvements in practice. 

We will cover:

  • Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement
  • Monitoring Assessment Practice
  • Validation and Moderation activity
  • Implementing Improvements

 

Session 3 - July 20

Topic 5

Evaluation is a broad concept and a process that all VET practitioners are familiar with as it applies to their teaching and assessment practice.  It is used to measure all areas of activity in the VET sector and often is undertaken by students and other stakeholders to provide feedback on performance.  It is important however, to also take the time to evaluate your own performance, to reflect on what you have learnt, and to see how you can improve what you do in the future,  This will help to deliver a better learning experience for your students.  During this topic you will learn how to evaluate and reflect on your own performance, implement improvements and to provide leadership to others in their reflective practice.

  • Self-Evaluation and Reflection
  • Group Evaluation
  • Skills and Knowledge Development

 

Topic 6

The world of work is changing, and industry is demanding that, student graduate ready to work in new and dynamic ways.  Blended learning experiences can assist students to develop a range of high level core skills for work and foundation LLN skills but we cannot just throw our current assessments online, we need to utilise the tools used in industry, develop digital literacy skills in our students and protect our students through the process.

In this topic, we will explore the implications of the blended learning environment on assessment.  You are not only required as a team leader to ensure assessments are online friendly, but that your assessors are capable of assessing their students.

During this topic you will learn how to evaluate your own performance as an assessor and the performance of your colleagues. 

We will cover:

  • Contractual requirements for online delivery
  • Digital literacy and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
  • Blended learning tools
  • Online assessment validation

Overview of Assessment

During the program you will complete assessment tasks which are listed, in detail, at the beginning of the course. These tasks may include but not limited to:

  • Workplace based projects
  • Online assessment (eg discussion forum, blog, wiki, quiz)
  • Professional conversation
  • Third-party reports

Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete all of the following tasks to a satisfactory standard.

You will receive written feedback on all assessment tasks.

Task 1: Provide advanced assessment practice

In this task you are asked to review your assessment tools and processes in your practice area, research advanced assessment practice and implement through the assessment against 50 units of competency.  

“… the 50 units could be made up as follows:

40 enrolled vocational learners assessed against the same unit of competency, plus 5 enrolled vocational learners assessed against 2 different units of competency or

50 enrolled vocational learners assessed against the same unit of competency.”

 

Task 2: Lead and influence assessors

You will be required to lead 3 other assessors who assess in a competency you are familiar with.  You will be working with this team throughout the duration of this assessment task and demonstrate how that leadership has led to improve processes and outcomes.  To demonstrate this you are required to unpack and review assessments for 3 units of competency, research assessment practice and improve upon assessment tools and processes.  Support your assessor team through evaluating the assessment processes, and reflect on your team's practice

Task 3: Knowledge questions

In this assessment you are to answer a series of short answer questions

 

It is a requirement of the Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (TAE50116) program that all assessment work be submitted electronically in Canvas. You are asked to submit any workplace projects as a single Word or PDF file which must include a signed RMIT Cover Sheet; multiple project files will not be accepted.

 

Submission deadlines:

Task 1: submission of work needs to be done in Canvas by midnight Friday August 21 2020

Task 2: submission of work needs to be done in Canvas by midnight Friday October 16 2020

Task 3: submission of work needs to be done in Canvas by midnight Friday September 18 2020
