Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to determine the remedial massage needs of athletes and to adjust assessment and treatment to develop preventative and injury related treatment strategies for athletes and other sport active people.
This unit applies to remedial massage therapists.
The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Musculoskeletal Pathology will be delivered as a 3 hour class. Various pathologies will be covered on a weekly basis, through theory and practical demonstrations.

Overview of Assessment
To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.

Assessment Tasks
Knowledge and Skills Assessments:
There will be 1 skills assessment and 1 knowledge assessment to assess your ability to apply the skills and knowledge delivered in class and outlined in the course notes for Musculoskeletal Pathology.
Assessment Task 1 – Clinic Observation
For this assessment the student is required to assess and treat three (3) different sporting injuries to recovery stage.
The student will;
- consult with the client
- adapt treatment strategies to meet clients’ needs
- monitor and evaluate the treatment strategy
- practise within legal, regulatory and ethical guidelines
These observations will be documented in the Practical Assessment Task template.
Assessment Task 2 - Knowledge Assessment
To be deemed as satisfactory for this subject, you will be required to complete one knowledge assessment designed to assess the knowledge required to adapt remedial massage practice for athletes.
The student is required to satisfactorily complete both assessment tasks to be deemed competent for this unit.

Bring 2 clean large towels and 1 face towel to class, wear loose comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes.
Important information regarding Assessment Tasks:
You are permitted to have a maximum of 2 resubmissions for this course. However each individual assessment may only be resubmitted once.
Resubmissions are not automatic and will only be approved at the discretion of the Program Coordinator, after consultation with the teacher.
All students will be contacted with 7 days by their course coordinator in regards to resubmission completion dates.
Please note an opportunity to repeat clinical placement is not guaranteed and will be at the discretion of the Clinical Coordinator/Program Manager.
EXTENSION OR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION
If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to attend on the due date of an assessment (e.g. test, examination, oral, etc.) OR you do attend, but your performance has been affected, you may submit an APPLICATION FOR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION within 5 working days of the due date. If Special Consideration is granted, you will be given the opportunity to complete/repeat the assessment task at a later date. For advice on this application please visit www.rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsideration or speak to your Program Coordinator.
