Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to understand the fundamentals of using digital technologies to collaborate in a workplace context, including working as part of a remote team. It involves undertaking a basic review of organisational processes to identify opportunities for using digital technologies to complete work tasks more efficiently and effectively.

The unit applies to those who use problem-solving skills and take responsibility for adopting and promoting approaches to improve organisational operations, particularly relating to the use of digital technologies.

Learning Outcomes


This course is structured to provide students with the optimum learning experience in order to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to understand the fundamentals of using digital technologies to collaborate in a workplace context, including working as part of a remote team.


Details of Learning Activities

This course is structures to provide you with the optimum learning experience. A range of learning activities are provided during the semester and are designed to enhance learning and understanding of the topics.

You will participate in a combination of group and individual learning activities. These activities will be provided through classroom work time and additional learning activities will be provided to you to complete outside of the scheduled class time.

A range of in class activities, case studies and independent research is included as the learning activities for this course. We expect you to participate and contribute in all scheduled learning activities.

The learning activities will also include group discussion, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practice your skills in a simulated workplace environment.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of the requirements in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks, for example:

  • direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
  • review of final printed documents
  • demonstration of techniques
  • observation of presentations
  • oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of software applications

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.


Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • plan and implement use of digital technology to collaborate in a work environment at least once.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • review business use of technology for collaboration and identify opportunities, priorities and risks associated with adopting new technologies according to organisational strategies
  • collect, analyse and present relevant information about digital applications
  • create and present a business case to relevant stakeholders for adopting new collaborative digital technologies
  • develop and communicate a plan to implement new ways of working collaboratively using digital technologies.


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • fundamentals of common digital applications, including key terms, concepts and user features
  • organisational requirements, policies and procedures
  • collaborative technologies and their use in a business context
  • format and content of a business case in the organisation
  • strategies for training and coaching in digital technologies
  • organisational commercial strategy relevant to digital technologies
  • key sources of information about digital applications, and options specific to the business.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment 1
This is the first of two (2) assessments that need to be completed satisfactorily in order to be deemed competent in this
course.
This assessment will assess your skills and knowledge in identifying an organisation’s existing collaborative ways of working,
matching those ways of working against their organisational strategies and objectives, providing recommendations for
collaboration technologies that will suit the organisation’s needs and, finally, seek assistance from technology specialists.
Assessment Instructions
What
This assessment is divided into five (5) questions. You must answer each of the questions below in relation to the case study
provided in the appendix of this assessment. The questions posed simulate a workplace environment scenario, where
managers are required to reflect on existing business processes and procedures and provide recommendations for
improvements.
You are the new Marketing and Communications Coordinator hired by for a national high-end office furniture retailer called
AustraDeal to improve their communication workflows. Read the scenario in Appendix 1 for more detail and then answer
the questions below.

Assessment 2
This is the second of two (2) assessments that need to be completed satisfactorily in order to be deemed competent in this
course.
This assessment will assess your skills and knowledge in planning the implementation of new digital technology within an
organisation and promoting the technology to members of the organisation.
This assessment continues from Assessment Task 1 and the case study of AustraDeal (see Appendix 1). In assessment task
you reviewed AustraDeal’s digital communication requirements and developed a Business Case proposing the adoption of
three suitable communication technologies. In this assessment task, are required to implement the new digital technologies
and promote these within the organisation.
