Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop glossaries for translating and interpreting assignments. It includes the ability to identify and source suitable reference material, and to make efficient use of tools and equipment.

This unit applies to those working as translators and interpreters who are responsible for minimising risks associated with inadequate preparation, or collaborating with colleagues in translating and interpreting tasks.

This unit will be delivered in a cluster as follows:

2.1. Access sources of information and reference material.

2.2. Critically analyse terminology in context of assignment and record selections.

3.1. Review preparation to confirm it addresses assignment requirements and update glossary as required.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be ongoing during the semester, and you will receive feedback on your progress. You will undertake a variety of assessment tasks and activities to assess your level of competence against key elements and performance criteria.

Assessment tasks may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- analyse translating and interpreting assignment information

- establish familiarity with topic and context

- review and evaluate own glossary


 


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1 - Prepare for an interpreting assignment

This is a simulated assessment to evaluate your ability to assess your own suitability to undertake and prepare for an interpreting assignment. You are required to demonstrate the ability to: collecting information for an assignment (nature and conditions of an assignment); reviewing your own competence and determining your suitability for the job based on the information collected; advising your clients and booking agencies of your decision; developing your work and preparation plan; research and develop glossaries that will be used in assignments; evaluating your plan and preparation for the assignment.

Assessment Task 2 - Prepare for a translation assignment

This is a simulated assessment to evaluate your ability to assess your own suitability to undertake and prepare for a translation assignment. You are required to demonstrate the ability to: collecting information for an assignment (nature and conditions of an assignment); reviewing your own competence and determining your suitability for the job based on the information collected; advising your clients and booking agencies of your decision; developing your work and preparation plan; research and develop glossaries that will be used in assignments; evaluating your plan and preparation for the assignment.


Assessment Matrix

Each assessment clearly outlines the competencies being addressed in the task in relation to performance criteria. The sum of assessment tasks will cover all units and their elements over a range of occasions. You will be given opportunities to demonstrate competency in a variety of ways throughout the program. You are encouraged to discuss any problems or concerns with your teacher or program coordinator.
