Course Description

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to understand and calculate force systems within simple beam structures. It involves solving simple engineering problems involving forces and moments and to determining nominal sizes of simple beams subject to loading.

The applies to work in all manufacturing and engineering workplace environments.

All work is carried out under supervision.

Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

MEM30012 Apply mathematical techniques in a manufacturing engineering or related environment

National Competency Codes and Titles

National Element Code & Title:

MEM30005 Calculate force systems within simple beam structures

Elements:

1. Determine the resultant and equilibrant of systems of coplanar forces

2. Determine reactions and moments for a simple horizontal beam subject to a combination of uniform and point loading

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate competency in the elements of this unit of competency.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS.

This unit is clustered with MEM30006 - Calculate stresses in simple structures and MEM23109 - Apply engineering mechanics principles.   Please make sure you are enrolled in all three units.
