Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to understand the fundamentals of internet computing and cloud services. It involves undertaking a basic review of business computing needs and identifying options for introducing cloud computing services into a small business or work area in an organisation.


It applies to individuals who use problem-solving skills and take responsibility for adopting and promoting approaches to improve business operations.

Details of Learning Activities

A range of learning activities is planned for this course by using the content in the learning management system, either online webinar sessions or collaborative classroom-based activities.

The collaborative classroom-based activities will include question & answer sessions using problem-solving skills and taking responsibility for adopting and promoting approaches to improve business operations in small business environments.

Primarily you will be learning either on campus or on a self-paced evening online course site for disseminating materials and some assessments. Students will be expected to attend four hours of class each week. Students will be equipped skills and knowledge required to understand the fundamentals of Internet computing and cloud services. It involves reviewing business computing needs and identifying options for introducing cloud computing services into an organisation's small business or work area. Solutions will be available in the prescribed textbook or canvas.

This course will be delivered through face-to-face classes in which you will participate in group discussions, activities, and exercises.  Classroom-based demonstrations and activities support your learning and provide you with the skills necessary to complete course assessments. Utilising each scheduled class session is recommended to get help and feedback about your weekly progress before leaving class.

You will be expected to commit approximately 2-3 hours each week to complete each weekly module and all 2 assessments for this unit due to the possibility of encountering errors, reworking from the start for each task, re-submission, etc., including class time and outside class time.


You'll need to bring your personal computer with access to an Office 365 account and have access to a learning management system for each class scheduled.

Overview of Assessment

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • review and analyse business computing use and needs, including equipment and software requirements
  • collect and analyse information about cloud computing including:
  • seeking assistance from specialist advisor as required
  • performing cost-benefit analysis
  • identifying potential risks
  • make the business case to introduce cloud computing
  • prepare a plan and support others to implement cloud computing.


Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • explain fundamentals of cloud computing, including key terms and concepts
  • outline sources of information about cloud computing for micro or small business, and options specific to the business
  • describe how to undertake a cost-benefit analysis and prepare a budget
  • summarise business protocols for using services of specialist advisors.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the Management and Leadership Small and Micro Business field of work and include access to:

  • business equipment and resources
  • business technology
  • relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes
  • relevant workplace documentation and resources
  • case studies or where possible, real situations
  • interaction with others.


Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Assessment Tasks

There are two (2) assessments in this unit.

Assessment 1 Fundamentals Knowledge of Cloud Computing and Accounting Systems

In assessment one (1) of two (2) assessment tasks, the student must demonstrate their ability to list and define the key requirements of introducing cloud computing into business operations. You will also be able to demonstrate your understanding of how to set up and operate a computerised accounting system.

Students are required to complete the following tasks 1 – 7

Where  

Students will be given some time in class to complete this assessment; however, it is expected that most of this assessment will be completed outside of class.  

How 

Students will be assessed on how well they answer the questions in tasks 1-7. You will be assessed against the criteria listed in the marking guide. To achieve a satisfactory result, you must address all criteria satisfactorily.

Students must submit their final assessment via Canvas by the due date per the unit syllabus. 



Assessment 2 Case Study – Reviewing Computer Needs within a Small Business Environment

The assessment aims to demonstrate students' knowledge and skills in reviewing computing needs and creating a plan to implement a cloud computing solution within a small business environment.

Assessment Instructions

What

Students need to read the scenario below and answer questions related to the scenario. From here, you must create a business case for a small bookkeeping business (Easy Bookkeeping) for a XERO Cloud Accounting software solution.

This assessment consists of three (3) tasks.

Tasks 1, 2 & 3 – The computing needs analysis

Students must write a report outlining the current hardware and software in place, identifying the cloud computing options and solutions for the business and short and long-term goals for implementing cloud solutions.

Tasks 4,5,6 & 7 – Prepare budget, cost-benefit analysis, and business case.

Students must complete a budget/cost analysis, create a business case (following the 9 steps you have learnt in this course) and prepare a plan to support the implementation of cloud accounting software.

Task 8 – Present the business plan & Support the Implementation Plan

Students must present the business plan video/audio presentation recording that runs min for 3-4 minutes and seek approval from your teacher where required. In this presentation, you must promote the plan’s key features and provide an overview of the cost-benefit analysis.

Where

Students will be provided some class time to work on this assessment. However, it is expected that the majority of this assessment is to be completed outside of class.

How

Students will be assessed against the criteria listed in the marking guide in Section B of this task. To achieve a satisfactory result, you must address all criteria satisfactorily.
Students must submit their final assessment via Canvas by the due date per the unit syllabus.

  • Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
  • When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use the Assessment task document that includes a declaration and statement of authorship.
  • Each page of your assessment should include footer with your name, student number, the title of the assessment, unit code and title and page numbers.

Late Submission Procedures:

You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.

If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Resubmissions (VE Programs):
