Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to facilitate and apply communication strategies in the workplace within any industry.


This unit has a specific focus on the communication skills required for supervisor level workers with responsibility for other workers.

This course is structured to provide students with the optimum learning experience in order to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to facilitate and apply communication strategies in the workplace within any industry.



Details of Learning Activities

This course is co-delivered with MKTG6107C Develop and apply knowledge of the communication industry

This course is structured to provide you with the optimum learning experience. A range of learning activities are provided during the semester and are designed to enhance learning and understanding of the topics.

You will be required to participate in a combination of group and individual learning activities. These activities will be provided through classroom work time and additional learning activities will be provided to you to complete outside of the scheduled class time.

A range of in class activities, case studies and independent research is included as the learning activities for this course. We expect you to participate and contribute in all scheduled learning activities.

The learning activities will also include group discussion, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practice your skills in a simulated workplace environment.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of the requirements in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks, for example:

  • direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
  • review of final printed documents
  • demonstration of techniques
  • observation of presentations
  • oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of software applications

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.


Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria, and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • identify the communication requirements for a work activity and assign roles to others to fulfil those requirements
  • select appropriate communication method for relevant audience and according to organisational requirements
  • articulate to others their roles in fulfilling the communication requirements and negotiate roles in response to feedback
  • present and convey information to others in a way that they can understand and demonstrate that the needs of all recipients, including those from diverse backgrounds have been considered
  • demonstrate problem solving techniques to negotiate and resolve communication challenges
  • evaluate the communication process and identify areas for improvement, reporting to relevant supervisors as required.


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • legislative requirements relevant to workplace communication
  • organisational requirements relevant to workplace communication (including digital form):
  • policies and protocols
  • codes of conduct
  • organisational reputation and culture
  • techniques to resolve communication challenges
  • methods and techniques to participate in workplace discussions, including active listening, questioning and providing feedback
  • key principles of cross-cultural communication and communication with individuals with special needs or disabilities
  • presentation methods to present and convey workplace information or instructions:
  • formal presentation using visual aids and prompts
  • informal team meeting or instructional briefing
  • written work instruction for a process or procedure
  • communication methods suited to audience and workplace requirement:
  • verbal means: telephones, mobiles, video conference
  • written means: emails, SMS, social media
  • communication challenges relevant to performance evidence:
  • conflicts with clients or team members
  • potential risks or safety hazards
  • unethical or inappropriate communication
  • use of visual prompts and presentations
  • communication that falls outside of workplace policy
  • key relevant features of:
  • different communication styles
  • different communication methods
  • cross cultural communication techniques.


Feedback

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions. You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment 1 Quiz

Summary and purpose of assessment
This assessment task is one of three assessment tasks that you must successfully complete to be deemed ‘competent’ in this cluster of units.
This purpose of this assessment is to assess your knowledge about the communications industry and workplace communication strategies through a series of questions that require short-answer responses.

Assessment 2
You are required to research the marketing communications industry, analyse industry sectors, associations, networks and
societal roles, key stakeholders, and prepare a report on their findings. The findings are to include a discussion on the issues and impact of new and alternative communication technology on the communications industry. You are also required to prepare a basic marketing communications piece consistent with an industry guideline, source feedback, and make required amendments.

You are required to undertake ‘desk research’ on the marketing communications industry and prepare a report on your
findings.

Assessment 3

Summary and Purpose of Assessment
This is assessment task three (3) of three (3). All three (3) assessment must be completed satisfactorily in
order to be deemed competent for this unit.

The purpose of this assessment tasks is to assess your skills and knowledge in identifying workplace tasks,
delegating and managing work, and communicating effectively in the workplace. This assessment task will
also assess your problem-solving skills in analysing communication issues or barriers, considering options,
and developing responses and opportunities for improvement.

Submission Requirements


You should:

  • Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date.  
  • Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
  • When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use the Assessment task document that includes a declaration and statement of authorship.
  • Each page of your assessment should include footer with your name, student number, the title of the assessment, unit code and title and page numbers.

Late Submission Procedures 


You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates. 

If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to five days.

Resubmissions:


If you are found to be unsuccessful in a particular Course Assessment Task (or you do not submit/attend) you will be allowed one resubmission.  Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission.  


If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.



Grading & re-submissions


Successful re-submissions will contribute a CA only (Competency Achieved) result to your overall grade for the course.
