Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish standards for the design and production of organisational documents and to manage document design and production processes to ensure agreed standards are met.


It applies to individuals employed in a range of work environments who require well-developed skills in the use of a range of software packages. They use these skills to establish, document and implement consistent standards of document design within an organisation.

Assessment Task 1 Overview (15 minutes)

This assessment has three parts:

Part A: Microsoft Word activities - The activities allow you to demonstrate your ability to create, edit and manage a range of business documents and templates. The aim is to develop skills and knowledge required to establish standards for the design and production of organisational documents.

There are exercise files that you will need to download from the Watsonia Publishing website https://www.watsoniapublishing.com/products/student-files  using the codes INF1165

Part B: Style Guide- This section of the assessment involves creating a style guide for a travel agency with the aim of establishing documentation standards and design tasks for organisational documents in accordance with information, budget and technological requirements.

The style guide requires you to include information on legislative and organisational requirements for information entry, storage, output, and quality of document design and production.

You will be asked to create templates that enhance readability and appearance of the document whilst meeting organisational requirements for style and layout.  You will develop strategies for maintenance and continuous improvement of the style guide and the templates.

The activities are designed to assess your capacity to incorporate organisational and industry standards required in the design and creation of documents. 

Part C: Presentation –  5 to 10-minute staff training presentation that includes instructions on the use of the templates and macros created in Part B, explaining the process for future changes and modification to documents.

  • All three parts of this assessment task need to be completed satisfactorily, for you to be deemed competent for this unit.

Overview of Assessment

In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:

Performance Evidence
Evidence of the ability to:
 identify the organisational needs, requirements and information technology capabilities relevant to the design and production of documents
 establish documentation standards to meet organisational requirements
 design, test and amend document templates
 develop and implement documentation and training to support use of standard templates and macros
 monitor the implementation of standard documentation templates and macros and make improvements in line with organisational requirements.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.


Knowledge Evidence
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
 describe document production processes
 identify costs involved with the implementation of standard documentation
 explain the software applications relevant to document design and development in the organisation
 identify key provisions of relevant legislation and regulations, codes and standards affecting document production
 outline organisational policies and procedures relating to document production
 list sources of expertise available externally to the organisation or workgroup.

 

Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the general administration field of work and include access to:
 computer hardware and other document production equipment
 software applications appropriate to the task
 media for production of documents
 samples of high quality standard documents.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions.  You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed.  Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.

Assessment Tasks

You are required to successfully complete all sections of the assessment task to be deemed competent in this course.  NOTE:  Details about specific tasks and assessment criteria will be included in the Learning Management System. 

BSBADM506 Manage Business Document Design and Development: Student Assessment Task - Portfolio of work

The assessment comprises of three parts:

Submission Requirements

You should:

     • Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date via Canvas. 
     • Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
     • When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use the Assessment task document that includes a declaration and statement of authorship.
     • Each page of your assessment should include a footer with your name, student number, the title of the assessment, unit code and title and page numbers.

Late Submission Procedures

You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.

Extension of Time.  If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Resubmission (VE Programs)

If you are found to be Not Yet Competent in a course assessment task (or you do not submit the assessment tasks/attend the assessment) you will be allowed one resubmission.  Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission in Canvas. 

If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.
