Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to create multiplatform advertisements for the communication of a product, service or idea to consumers.

The unit applies to individuals who work in supervisory management roles within an advertising team or media organisation and are primarily responsible for the development of advertisements.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of the requirements in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks, for example:

  • direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
  • review of final printed documents
  • demonstration of techniques
  • observation of presentations
  • oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of software applications

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.


Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • create at least three advertisements for multi-platform advertising.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • adhere to time, schedule, budget and legal requirements
  • evaluate multiplatform advertisements and identify and document areas for improvement.


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • industry, services, products and organisation
  • purposes and principles of advertising
  • principles of consumer behaviour
  • content and development requirements for specific advertising platform
  • provisions of legislation, codes of practice and standards affecting advertising
  • legal and ethical principles relevant to advertising industry timelines, budget and resources requirements.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions. You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.

You should take note of all feedback received and use this information to improve your learning outcomes and final performance in the course.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1 - due in Week 8, Sunday, end of the day, Presentation: Week 9, in class

This assessment has three parts: 

Part A – Planning and Development of Advertising Material 

In this section, you will need to analyse what you are required to do, develop a project brief, develop a schedule, budget and creative copy for the advertisements. 

Part B – Development of Visuals

In this section, you will develop visuals for the three formats of the advertisements. You will need to apply and explain design and layout principles.

Part C – Legislation

This section is about important legislation and ethics when developing an advertisement and how it is relevant to your ideas. 

Submit a report covering all the questions and tasks of Part A and C and the visuals for your advertisements for Part B.

Present your report and visuals in class in week 9.

 

Assessment Task 2 - due in Week 14, Sunday, end of the day:

For this assessment, you will continue from Assessment Task 1 to develop advertisement concepts for one existing product.

Develop three (3) refined concept variations for each of these:

  • a banner ad for a webpage,
  • a social media ad (Facebook or Instagram) and
  • a billboard advertisement

This assignment is structured in two parts:

Part A - Finalise the Advertisements

  1. Complete three (3) digital concept variations each with the same visual, branding and complete and proof-read copy for: 
    • Web banner ad (3 variations) 
    • Social media ad (3 variations) 
    • Billboard (3 variations) 
  1. Supply digital files of nine (9) final advertisements. 
  1. Develop the digital advertisement in consultation with the client (your instructor) by showing them your work before finalising (have consulted the assessor at least once).

Part B – Questions and Support Documentation 

Complete the eight questions to support your visuals.

Submit your advertisements and the report in week 14 and present your work in week 15.

Submission Requirements

 

You should:

  • Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date.  
  • Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
  • When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use the Assessment task document that includes a declaration and statement of authorship.
  • Each page of your assessment should include footer with your name, student number, the title of the assessment, unit code and title and page numbers.

Late Submission Procedures  

You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates. 

If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Resubmissions: 

If you are found to be unsuccessful in a particular Course Assessment Task (or you do not submit/attend) you will be allowed one resubmission.  Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission.  

 

If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.
