Purpose of the Program

The Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition is about the science of manufacturing food and making it safe and nutritious.

In this program you will learn to turn raw materials such as milk and cereal grains into food products such as ice- cream and breakfast cereals. You also learn to improve the quality of manufactured food supply, creating safe and nutritious food that has a long shelf life. You will be trained in the full range of theoretical and practical aspects of food technology and nutrition science. You will develop novel, healthy and functional food products that meet the consumer demands as well as industry’s strict safety and health guidelines.

The teaching approach in this program is designed to foster your development as an independent learner so you will be able to extend your capabilities once you graduate. The teaching method includes lectorial, seminar, tutorial, practical and laboratory sessions, and the provision of online materials.

In this program you will have the opportunity to focus on one or both of the Food Technology and Nutrition majors. In the first year of study, you will take foundation courses such as chemistry and microbiology as well as being introduced to food processing and nutrition. Later, your studies focus more on courses related to your majors. The nutrition major focuses on human health and nutrition courses while the food technology major deals with traditional and novel technologies employed in the manufacture of food products, as well as sensory evaluation of foods, product development and quality assurance.

The program prepares you to work in roles in various sectors of the food industry including:  

  • Becoming the owner or manager of a food and/or food ingredient manufacturing company
  • Working in a large food processing company
  • Developing new food products with nutrition at their core
  • Developing food management programs for schools or healthcare facilities

BP199 Bachelor of Food Technology and Nutrition provides you with a capstone experience, which will give you the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your program. Your capstone experience in ONPS2729 Food Formulation and Design is designed to address the whole life cycle of the food industry by bringing together all you have learned in previous courses and thereby preparing you for being job-ready for a career in the food industry. You will experience Work Integrated Learning (WIL) through activities in courses OHTH2178 Applied Nutrition, and ONPS2695 Rheology and Food Biophysics,

The food technology and nutrition program will be delivered through a combination of blended on-line and face-to-face delivery.

Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program.  As a successful graduate of this program, you may (upon application) be eligible to proceed to MC237 Master of Food Science and Technology or other postgraduate programs. Acceptance into these programs would be subject to each program's entry requirements.

High school graduation diploma with a minimum GPA of 7.0/10.0 for Grade 12, for other international qualifications please view entry requirements by country here.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page

Final Grade 12 result of one of the following subjects with a minimum of 6 out of 10:

Membership

Graduates of this program are eligible for membership with the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST) and Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA). 

Industry Links  

This program has an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC). Membership is diverse and drawn from external industry and professional institutions. This committee helps inform program development and ensure that program content and student learning outcomes remain closely aligned with the needs of future employers. In addition, academic staff maintain connections with industry to develop and deliver work integrated learning experiences as well as offer advice on professional careers.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
