During May 2008 Susan Barr, Associate Director, Corporate Executive Education, joined a high level business mission to China led by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, John So. Comprised of some twenty representatives from sixteen organizations from industries for which Melbourne has a global reputation, including others from RMIT, the mission’s purpose was to explore business and partnerships in Tianjin, Beijing and Guangzhou.

Some of the highlights of the trip were:

  • Asia Society’s 18th Asian Corporate Conference. The theme of the conference “A new era for Global Business: Sustainable Growth for China and the World”. It was most evident that China and the `world’ are focused on being green, being innovative, developing an entrepreneurial culture and fostering collaboration.
  • Celebration of the 10th anniversary of the opening Tianjin/City of Melbourne office. The event recognized the signing of five MoU’s including one between RMIT and Tianjin Normal University.
  • A tour and briefing from the Tianjin Economic Technological Development Area (TEDA), with whom the Graduate School of Business (GSB) hopes to undertake joint projects in association with Tianjin Normal University. The trip also allowed Susan Barr to continue negotiations with the North China Electric Power University (NCEPU). NCEPU are keen to work in partnership with the GSB to deliver the MBA (Executive) program.

The GSB has a strong presence in Tianjin, as a result of the Senior Leaders Program that has been running at RMIT for the past eight years. The 10th group will finish their 11 week course in the middle of August, having covered a wide range of topics centred around public administration, leadership and international business development.

On a lighter note on Friday evening, 8 August at 8.08pm, GSB staff and the 16 Tianjin Senior Government leaders celebrated the opening of the Beijing Olympic games.
