Are you learning French at RMIT?
Do you have an intermediate or advanced level of French, or are you a fluent or native speaker of French studying at RMIT?
Are you a native speaker of French here on exchange?
Are you interested in helping other students of French?
Join the French mentoring program at RMIT and be rewarded by the experience.
Parlez-vous français? is an RMIT accredited volunteer program, for which mentors receive a certificate signed by the Vice-Chancellor, a record of your contribution on your official academic transcript, and an invitation to the annual LEAD Student Volunteer Recognition Event.
Mentors are required to complete 5 hours of training and 15 hours of mentoring over one or two semesters. Training is carried out through RMIT LEAD - Student engagement and leadership development (www.rmit.edu.au/lead) and with the coordinator of French studies.
Mentors work with beginning students of French for 1–2 hours each week, to assist with their specific language or study related difficulties and/or to provide extra practice with French.
As mentors, you will be asked to reflect on your learning and experience of the program through a learning journal, and will be invited to a feedback session during semester to monitor the progress of the program.
Volunteer mentees are asked to commit to attending the weekly mentoring sessions which have been organised with mentors.
You are encouraged to bring along any language or learning problems you are experiencing, together with any homework you require assistance with.
Mentors and mentees will be required to complete a questionnaire at the end of semester for feedback on the mentoring program.
The program will enhance your language learning experience, resulting in increased confidence and motivation. You will discover different learning styles, build network with other students, learn effective ways to communicate, and share successful language learning strategies.
Recruitment will take place in weeks 1-2 of semester and mentor training will take place in weeks 3-4. The mentoring will take place weekly throughout semester beginning in week 4-5.
“It has been a great experience and thoroughly beneficial …. as well as boosting the confidence in regards to what I have already learnt - the repetition of it all has been priceless.”
“A brilliant initiative with effective outcomes that play as much a role in aiding the mentees, as it allows for personal reflection of knowledge and further education in the mentor.”
“It has helped me to clearly understand the content of the course. The information that was learned in class was successfully backed up by the mentoring.”
“It has improved my grammar rules and motivation to learn.”
“Good for building strong friendships with classmates and creating ‘study buddies’.”
“A great way to boost learning.”
