Application Information for B.A. (Fine Art) (Local Students)

Entrance Requirements
Applicants are advised to consult the RMIT applications procedures and entrance requirements for a full statement of general entrance requirements.

Entry into first year of the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) program requires successful completion of an approved Australian Year 12 (e.g VCE) or an equivalent program of study; or successful completion of a relevant two year full-time (or equivalent part-time) middle-level certificate at a TAFE-Vocational Education and Training College; or an equivalent qualification.

Recognition of Prior Learning/Articulation
The School is committed to enhancing student mobility between TAFE and Higher Education academic awards and programs. To assist student mobility, the School applies the following principles; merit based selection; multiple entry and exit points for TAFE awards; and credit recognition for prior experience and performance. Students are expected and encouraged to maximise the flexibility of choice and advanced standing the School has committed itself to providing.

Extra Requirements
To apply for the Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) for 2009 all applicants must:

  • Apply to VTAC by 30 September 2008: Refer to the VTAC website for full details.
  • Submit a pre-selection kit to the School of Art by Friday October 10. Pre-selection kits will be available from the School of Art during Open Day 2008 on Sunday August 10, and from the School of Art website from August.

Folio Requirements
The folio is expected to demonstrate ability in the discipline, originality, innovation and experimental resolution of projects as well as evidence of basic technical competence. Examples of work should include 2D and/or 3D works, including drawings, sketches, idea developments, paintings and prints, digital images, video (VHS), etc., made by the applicant. If works are too large to transport, then photographs may be presented.

Interview

  • If your pre-selection kit meets the requirements, you will be invited to attend an interview. Interviews are held in late November / early December. You will need to present a folio of selected works at the interview.
  • Entry is primarily based on this interview. Students have the opportunity to discuss the program and their folio.

Weighting of Selection Criteria
Applicants are graded using the following weightings: folio 75%, interview 25%.

Folio Requirements and Interview Guidelines

If you have been shortlisted for an interview, the following guidelines will assist you to meet the requirements of the selection panel.

Folio Requirements

The work you bring should include finished work but can also include work in progress, if you are a Year 12 student and your VCE folio is available, it may form part of your submission, but you should additional work where possible.

  • 10 pieces of work, sketchbook, art journal
  • Passport size photograph of yourself.
  • If works are too large to transport, then photographs may be presented.
  • Please ensure if you are bringing work on disc or a WWW URL that you also bring a backup copy.
  • All digital work must be MAC compatible. DO NOT bring work that needs specific software to view, such as Powerpoint presentations or .exe files.
  • For image work, ensure that images are under 10MB in size so they can be opened quickly.
  • The folio is expected to demonstrate ability in the discipline, originality, innovation and experimental resolution of projects as well as evidence of basic technical competence. You should include a selection drawings, sketchbook and journal.

Examples of Major work should include:

Ceramics:
Up to 5 pieces of work

Drawing, Fine Art Photography, Gold &Silversmithing, Printmaking, Painting or Sculpture:
No more than10 major pieces of work

Sound:
A ten minute CD comprising solo or collaborative compositions and/or performances. The CD can contain complete works or excerpts. In addition DVDs can be submitted for installation works or to demonstrate sound designs for screen, dance or theatre works.

Media Arts:
Video (VHS), miniDV, DVD, CD Rom, video documentation of installation works, WWW URL’s

Interview

Prepare your folio so that it can be easily viewed or listened to by the panel.
Interviews are conducted in a friendly and supportive manner and are normally expected to take approximately 15 – 20mins.
You will be given the opportunity to ask questions to the panel

The panel will be seeking evidence of the following (applicable to the studio area)

  • Idea development
  • Experimentation with materials
  • Originality/self expression
  • Ability to perceive and utilise colour
  • Skill base relative to level of experience
  • Research/drawing ability
  • Computer skills
  • Observation skills

Interview Questions will include:

  • You will be asked to briefly talk about the folio presented
  • Which artists are you currently interested in
  • Which galleries and other cultural institutions do you regularly visit
