The Graduate Diploma in Art in Public Space program takes an holistic approach to learning and assessment. You will develop capability through direct project work and integrating special areas of study. The educational philosophy of this program is to create agency, autonomy, flexibility and self-determination to ensure that you have a high quality learning experience and to help you develop activated professional networks in industry, government and community.
Our courses ensure that your assessment tasks are authentic and that you will develop the appropriate research skills required for an art in public space career. Some projects and opportunities are developed as block activities. This includes optional overseas project opportunities and an intensive program carried out each year in the month of March. Combining both small group and individual practice and encouraging collaborative feedback, you will learn in a cohesive and supportive environment. You are also able to participate in specialist seminars, master classes and workshops.
The Graduate Diploma in Art in Public Space program has a strong international focus, supported by projects undertaken both locally and overseas. The flexible structure of the program allows you to follow your professional needs and/or interests so that you can develop clear employment pathways upon graduation.
You will have 24-hour access to a dedicated studio space for your public art practice. Program lecturers are leaders in their fields, and you will have access to on-site projects that are developed with government, community organizations and industry partners.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:
- undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
- interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
- complete these activities in real work contexts or situations
Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated in a workplace environment.
The designated work integrated learning course for GD070 Graduate Diploma in Art in Public Space is:
VART3420 Art in Public Space Studio 1
You will undertake project work as the principle method for integrated learning. Projects can be simulated or real depending on interest and available opportunities. You will receive feedback from industry representatives about your work.
When available, some optional courses also offer WIL opportunities.

Program transition plan
In 2021 the program structure of the GD070 Graduate Diploma of Art in Public Space was amended and the following changes applied:
· Course title change from VART3420 Integrated Project 1 to VART3420 Art in Public Space Studio 1
· Course title change from VART3421 Integrated Project 2 to VART3421 Art in Public Space Studio 2
· Replacement of VART3422 Theories and Professional Practice 1 (24 credit points) with VART3613 Strategies for Creative Research (12 credit points) and VART3615 Critical Frameworks A (12 credit points)
· Replacement of VART3423 Theories and Professional Practice 1 (24 credit points) with 2 x Program Option Courses (21 new options added to the program structure.
In 2023 the program structure of the GD070 Graduate Diploma of Art in Public Space will be amended and the following changes applied:
· Removal of Program Option courses: VART3621 Language of Creative Practice, VART3620 Professional Creative Practice
· New Program Option Course: OART1103 Working in First Peoples contexts: creative partnerships and cultural production
Active students in the MC281 Master of Arts (Art in Public Space) who are seeking to exit their qualification with the GD070 Graduate Diploma in Art in Public Space will not be disadvantaged by these changes.
