Course Description

In this course you will develop the skills to establish communication strategies and ares's of responsibilities to ensure that design and production of garments can be produced efficiently.

Topic:   Garment and Pattern Development

Overview: In this topic you will develop skills and knowledge about basic patternmaking principles, pattern information, tools, and equipment. You will be introduced to pattern blocks and how they are used to develop patterns. You will begin by learning about pattern information and start using pattern terminology. You will learn to manipulate darts and how this can transform a garment. You will develop skills to use a range of workplace documents to record and communicate pattern and construction Information for different outcomes. Information that will be covered is:

  • The tools and equipment used for patternmaking 
  • Patternmaking principles and design terminology 
  • Pattern markings and their meanings and purpose 
  • Fabric performance characteristics 
  • Quality standards and practices, and 
  • Workplace procedures  
  • Recording and reporting practices  

You will develop patternmaking skills to create new patterns from existing blocks and use the following basic but essential pattern manipulation techniques:

Overview: In this topic you will further developknowledge and skills to identify, handle and match fabrics to production outcomes. You will expand your knowledge developed in Semester 1 and apply that knowledge to real world outcomes by selecting fabrics based on performance requirements, qualities, and useability for your own patterns that you have developed. You will develop skills to identify: 

  • fabric performance and suitability for production and end use
  • quality characteristics
  • potential finish implications
  • sustainability considerations
  • care and labelling requirements
  • potential faults and implications for suitability

You will develop skills to use workplace documents to record information about fabric.

Topic:   Sustainability and Interactions in the Fashion & Textiles

Overview: In this topic you will be introduced to concepts about sustainability in fashion and textiles, why it is important to develop and maintain a sustainable practice and the important of clear and appropriate communication in our interactions with others in the industry. You will develop a range of knowledge and skills to support the application of these concepts into your work practice.

 

You will learn about:

  • supply chains and where raw materials come from,
  • the process of fibre, yarn and garment production at scale,
  • the social and environmental effects,
  • solutions to problems in the industry
  • legislation and certifications, and sustainable standards to support change
  • how to develop a sustainable practice

You will also learn about:

  • different roles in design and production,
  • a range of suitable workplace tools to assist in communicating ideas
  • how technology can enhance communication through use of tools
  • industry language and terminology
  • processes to maintain quality in communications
  • sharing information including seeking advice and feedback

 

You will bring all this knowledge together and apply it to your work practice in the production room while developing verbal, visual and written communication skills.

You will also learn about different documents used in clothing production and how these can assist in communicating information and maintain quality standards.
