Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply workplace policies and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for self and others. This includes identifying work health and safety (WHS) hazards, assessing risk and following safety procedures in the workplace with minimal supervision.

Working Safely

Overview: In this topic you will develop knowledge of safe working practices while working in the production room. 

 Before starting any sewing activities, you will need to understand the process of working safely in an environment that has many potential hazards and is full of unfamiliar equipment. You will learn how to operate sewing machines, industrial steam irons and other equipment in the production room.  

You will learn about laws and legislation that protect everyone in the workplace and the responsibilities of different people. 

You will learn to identify risks and hazards and what to do in the event of an emergency. You will learn to understand safety signage and use PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) related to tasks undertaken in the production room. 

You will then apply this knowledge in every learning and assessment task you undertake in the production room

Sewing & Quality Standards 

Overview: In this topic you will develop knowledge and understanding of woven, knitted, and non-woven fabrics and textiles, including identifying fabric characteristics and performance. 

 You will learn how to set up a sewing machine and perform a range of sewing operations. You will begin by completing a technical sewing workbook to build your sewing skills and develop confidence. You will then begin to apply this knowledge and sew textile products, starting with a sewing kit and as skills develop move onto a tote bag and finally an apron. These products will progressively allow you to demonstrate more complex skills. 

You will learn about various sewing and sewing machine standard operating procedures (SOPs). You will learn about quality standards, why they are important and how to identify faults and corrective actions. You will perform quality checks on all your work. 

You will also learn about different documents used in clothing production and how these can assist to communicate information and maintain quality standards.

Fabrics and Textiles in the Workplace

Overview: In this topic you will develop knowledge and understanding of woven, knitted, and non-woven fabrics and textiles, including identifying fabric characteristics and performance. 

 You will learn how to source many different types of information about fabrics in the workplace. You will learn how to identify different fabric structures and how they are constructed. You will also learn what are the commonly used fabrics in fashion and textiles and how to identify them based on fabric characteristics and qualities. You will learn about different accessories and trims and match them to suitable fabrics. Finally, you will learn how to identify a range of faults and perform basic fabric tests.  

You will document basic knowledge of fabrics, textile materials and accessories, such as threads, zips or buttons and trims used in clothing production following instructions, demonstrations, and group discussions. 

 

You will then apply this knowledge to sewing activities undertaken in the production room.

Assessments will be in the form of tests for underpinning knowledge and demonstration and observation of your ability to identify work health and safety (WHS) hazards, assess risk and follow safety procedures in the workplace with minimal supervision.
