Overview of Assessment

There must be evidence that you have provided complete and appropriate information to at least 10 different patients including:

  • providing information on the prevention of oral diseases
  • providing advice and demonstrating oral hygiene techniques
  • inform and motivate behaviour change.

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.

Regular attendance is necessary.

Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of knowledge assessment, case studies and practical based tasks.

Assessment Tasks

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.

To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

You should refer to the assessment brief which is available through Canvas for full assessment criteria

Assessment Task 1 – Clinical log book

You will be undertaking this assessment process across 2 semesters in the dental clinic context under the supervision and mentoring of a suitably qualified dental practitioner(s) or oral health educator, implementing oral hygiene education  for at least 10 different patients
 including:
- providing information on the prevention of oral diseases
- providing advice and demonstrating oral hygiene techniques
- using learning and motivational skills to inform and motivate behaviour change.

Assessment Task 2 – Supervised knowledge test

This assessment is a supervised test  covering the  knowledge evidence ( refer above ) of the unit and including

- providing information on risk factors for oral diseases, and

-providing advice on prevention of oral diseases

Assessment Task 3– Case presentation

For this assessment task, you will choose an individual patient case  from your clinical log book and deliver complete and appropriate
information in PowerPoint format following a prescribed framework related to that patient including:
- providing information on the prevention of oral diseases
- providing advice and demonstrating oral hygiene techniques
- using learning and motivational skills to inform and motivate behaviour change

Results that apply to courses that are delivered and assessed in accordance with competency-based assessment are:

CA: Competency Achieved
NYC: Not Yet Competent
DNS: Did not Submit for Assessment

Assessment Matrix

The assessment matrix demonstrates alignment of assessment tasks with the relevant unit of competency.
