Course Description
This course describes the skills and knowledge required to provide an oral health promotion program and applies to dental assistants and to other health care workers who are actively involved in promoting general well-being through the promotion of healthy eating habits and good oral health.

There is a self directed short -answer written research task that underpins health promotion theory and investigates the national health priorities in Australia
You will be working with a partner for the whole project with the guidance of the facilitator.
You will learn strategies on presenting information to a group of people/class colleagues. This may be online and/or in person

Overview of Assessment
There must be evidence of your ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role.
There must be evidence that you have:
- developed 1 oral health program for a specific target group within the community, including:
- identifying the target group and key concerns
- developing specific promotion strategies and resources to reach the target group
- integrating promotion with targeted National Health Priorities
- facilitated discussion with 10 people on oral health care including:
- causes and prevention of oral diseases
- dietary habits and the impact of healthy eating on oral health
- behavioural change for improved oral health.
To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.
Regular attendance is necessary.
Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of and practical based tasks and a portfolio of work.
Assessment Tasks
Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.
To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.
Results that apply to courses that are delivered and assessed in accordance with competency-based assessment are:

Assessment Task 1 – Product
The assessments for this unit will include preparing an oral health promotion program for a specific target group and then delivering the program to that group of 10 or more people.
Assessment Task 2 – Practical
The second stage of these assessments is to present your oral health program to your ‘target group’ and review your presentation. You will be using the planning and resources that you created in Assessment 1. Students must have successfully completed Assessment 1 before they can undertake this assessment.
