Course Description

In this course you will acquire the skills and knowledge required to identify, select and use a range of self-care strategies to support sustainability of own practice and actively implement mental wellbeing and self-care in the creative industries. This includes implementing preventative techniques and evaluating their success against an individualised self-care plan.

Details of Learning Activities

This course consists of 2 Units of Competency that are clustered together for delivery and assessment. The other unit of competency in this clustered course is: BSBPEF402 - Develop personal work priorities

In class learning activities may include, but are not limited to:

Class 1

Course overview – what is self-care? - Summary of assignments.

Research “self-care” as a process including:

a.     Determining factors that impact your own wellbeing in a Creative Industries environment

b.     Basic principles of positive psychology including personal values and strengths

c.     Identify self-care techniques and features of self-care plans.

d.     Differentiating between maintenance and emergency self -care.

e.     Evaluating the risks of neglecting your own self-care highlighting those that are specific to the creative industries.

f.      Discuss the techniques, risks and strategies with your colleagues

The purpose of this unit is to familiarise people who may not have worked or planned their own work to any great extent and who may never have had responsibility for their own self-care in a work context.

Do you own personal research for AT1 in class today and begin to draft a personal Self-Care Plan.

Finalise your research and  Self-Care Plan draft for AT1 so you can implement it in the coming weeks for evaluation and adjustment.

Implement and review the AT1 draft Self-Care Plan

Identify aspects that need changing and researching what could be included, altered or removed in relation to the requirements of the assessment.

Class 7

 Review the Self-Care Plan and write a paragraph on how you adjusted your plan. If you made no changes, how has creating the plan worked for you?

Class 8

Finalise your updated AT1 plan for submission. 

Fully develop, implement and review your personal self-care plan

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS.


Assessment Tasks

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency.  To be assessed competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace. To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

Assessment 01: Establish Life Balance

In this assessment, students will research “self-care” processes and explore planning/scheduling tools for help develop a work-life balance plan in the context of a creative environment.
