Course Description

In this course you will develop the skills and knowledge required to undertake a minor project or a section of a larger project. It covers developing a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project and reviewing the project to identify lessons learned for application to future projects.

Details of Learning Activities

In this program, structured learning occurs in the classroom and through completion of assessment. However, as an independent learner you will also be engaged in unstructured activities such as private study and practice of technical skills required in using cameras, lighting and sound equipment and editing tools . You are also expected to  familiarise yourself with different aspects of the screen and media industry. This includes spending time engaged in attending films and film festivals, watching streamed content, attending industry events and exhibitions and building relationships with industry bodies such as the Screen Producers Association and the Australian Society of Cinematographers.

Week 2

Production management essentials – discussion and group work during class time to explore pre-production, principal photography, post-production and the deliverables cycle.

Story outline, story planning, interview questions and storyboarding.

Activity: Peer group learning exercise; including minutes taking.

 

Week 3

Production management essentials – discussion and group work during class time to explore pre-production, principal photography, post-production and the deliverables cycle.

Shooting schedule and call sheet administration; including budgeting and safety hazard assessments.

Film permits; including location recce and agreements.

Reading: Handouts from teacher. Please also refer to Production Guide.

Activity: Group meeting (in-class) along with minutes taking.

 

 

Week 4

Pre-production, principal photography and deliverables cycle.

Students will:
1. Finalise pre-production; including copyright and clearances.

2. Brief and seek feedback from production unit members;

3. Engage in post-production preparation;

4. Seek feedback from teachers and other collaborators.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS.


Assessment Tasks

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace. To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assessments to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessments.

Assessment Task 1 - This assessment requires you to participate in a group to plan, prepare, complete and review a short documentary project. To produce the short documentary, five steps need to covered; 1 - Define documentary project scope; 2 - Plan documentary project; 3 - Administer documentary project; 4 - Finalise documentary project; 5 - Review project. Due Date: Rolling assessment, please see assessment schedule, weeks 8 to 11

Assessment Task 2 -  This assessment requires you to write a reflective and analytical report on your short documentary production project. Due Date: Rolling assessment, please see assessment schedule, weeks 12 to 15.

Assessment tasks 1 and 2 are to be finalised by no later than end of Semester 1 Week 16.
