Course Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to direct film and television production crews.

It applies to individuals responsible for visualising and defining the style and structure of productions. They apply high-level communication skills to convey creative and visual ideas and motivate production personnel to play a part in producing their vision for screen productions. They act with a high degree of autonomy, are members of a production team, and need to collaborate with technical and administrative personnel and be willing to make compromises where necessary.

3.1 Facilitate interactions between performers and production crew to meet planned technical and creative requirements 3.2 Direct retakes where necessary, arriving at innovative and imaginative solutions to problems, in collaboration with crew members 3.3 Provide clear instructions and cues to production crews 3.4 Record all sequences and additional material in line with production deadlines 3.5 Implement work health and safety (WHS) procedures according to organisational procedures 3.6 Evaluate shoots from a director's perspective, including own performance, and note areas for future improvement 3.7 Provide feedback to production crew members and invite their comments on shoots.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge of course content is assessed through participation in a range of team based screen content productions.


Assessment Tasks

For each assessment task you will receive a detailed brief specifying requirements

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assessments to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessments.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task1 - Short Answer Knowledge Questions. For this assessment, you are required to respond to a series of short answer questions. Due Date: week 2

Assessment Task 2 - Directing Pre-Production. In preparation for directing a production (assessment 3), you must first brief the crew on shoot requirements, establishing and maintaining clear lines of communication and keep production documentation up to date in a repository that is accessible to all cast and crew. As a Director you should identify the skills of each crew member, invite input from crew and update paperwork accordingly. Due Dates: weeks 3 to 11

Assessment Task 3 - Directing Shoots. In this assessment you are required to plan and execute shoot procedures, direct rehearsals for each shot, meet planned technical and creative requirements, provide clear instructions to production cast and crew, implement work health and safety (WHS) procedures, problem solve with crew when required, record, back up and edit the production. Evaluate your own performance and give constructive feedback to crew members. Due Dates: weeks 5 to 15

Assessment tasks 1, 2 and 3 are to be finalised by no later than end of Semester 2 Week 16.
