Course Description

This course describes the skills and knowledge required to direct film and television production crews. It involves preparing required personnel for shoots, rehearsing shoots, and directing shoots according to production requirements.

Details of Learning Activities

In this program, structured learning occurs in the classroom and through completion of assessment. However, as an independent learner you will also be engaged in unstructured activities such as private study and practice of technical skills required in using cameras, lighting and sound equipment and editing tools . You are also expected to  familiarise yourself with different aspects of the screen and media industry. This includes spending time engaged in attending films and film festivals, watching streamed content, attending industry events and exhibitions and building relationships with industry bodies such as the Screen Producers Association and the Australian Society of Cinematographers.

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. Assessment Tasks

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. Assessment 1  - Short Answer Questions - This task allows you to demonstrate your knowledge related to directing screen production crews. More specifically it covers the roles, responsibilities and interaction with the director, the challenges and solutions when directing screen production crews along with conventions and practices, technical and artistic elements as well WHS considerations. Date Due: week 4

Assessment 2 - Directing Pre-production - Short Film Project - In preparation for directing a production (assessment 4), you must first brief the crew on shoot requirements, establishing and maintaining clear lines of communication and keep production documentation up to date in a repository that is accessible to all cast and crew. As a Director you should identify the skills of each crew member, invite input from crew and update paperwork accordingly. Date Due: weeks 3 to 13

Assessment 3 - Directing Pre-production - Behind the Scenes Project - In preparation for directing a behind the scenes production (assessment 5), you must first brief the crew on the shoot requirements, establishing and maintaining clear lines of communication and keep production documentation up to date in a repository that is accessible to all cast and crew. As the behind the scenes Director you should identify the skills of each crew member, invite input from crew and update paperwork accordingly. Date Due: weeks 3 to 13

Assessment 4 - Directing Shoots - Short Film Project - In this assessment you are required to plan and execute shoot procedures, direct rehearsals for each shot, meet planned technical and creative requirements, provide clear instructions to production cast and crew, implement work health and safety (WHS) procedures, problem solve with crew when required, record, back up and edit the production. Evaluate your own performance and give constructive feedback to crew members. Date Due: weeks 8 to 15
