Purpose of the Program

The Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching will provide you with a university teaching qualification equivalent to AQF Level 8. It also enables you to achieve the RMIT Educators and Researchers Capabilities. The program is delivered in blended mode.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching will qualify you to apply a body of specialized knowledge in a range of contexts to undertake professional/highly skilled work and provide a potential pathway for further learning. Beginning with transformational ideas in higher education, you will investigate university education using a problem-based approach over four courses culminating in a capstone project. You will use solving problems in familiar topics to develop a process of inquiry for critically reflecting on innovations and transitions in course design and teaching practices in an era of open scholarship and ubiquitous technology use.

The program adopts an Australasian Asia Pacific perspective. It prepares you for further study in learning and teaching at a Masters level.

Knowledge

As graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching, you will have specialized knowledge within a systematic and coherent body of knowledge that may include the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills in a new or existing discipline or professional area. Throughout the program, you will extend your understanding of the learning and teaching literature in higher education. A large body of knowledge about the field of study exists. You will actively seek information to solve problems related to your own learning and teaching settings. You will develop an understanding of course design, assessment, blended learning, and work-integrated learning. The pedagogical approach helps you experience and understand the RMIT signature pedagogy of collaborative learning and self-directed and self-regulated learning.

Skills

As graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching, you will have the cognitive skills to review, analyze, consolidate and synthesize knowledge and identify and provide solutions to complex problems. All core courses in the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching require you to define, elaborate, analyze and provide potential solutions for complex learning and teaching problems in higher education. The sequence of learning in all courses provides a cycle of collaborative problem definition, self-directed study intended to provide solutions to the problem in the form of group and individual presentations and reports. It will foster specialized technical and creative skills in a field of highly skilled and/or professional practice communication skills to demonstrate an understanding of theoretical concepts. The sequence of learning in all courses emphasizes collaboration, peer and self-assessment. You will work in small groups to solve problems in a collaborative and supportive way. You will regularly present your understanding and potential solutions to complex problems throughout the program. You will apply scholarly solutions to problems in different schools and discipline contexts. You will further develop your communication skills to transfer complex knowledge and ideas to a variety of audiences. All courses will include group and individual assessments, course design activities and reports demonstrating critical analysis of topics. You will maintain a reflective journal throughout the program, and at times you will share your reflections with other participants.

Application of knowledge and skills

As graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Learning and Teaching, you will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills to make high-level, independent judgments in a range of technical or management functions in varied specialized contexts.

The inquiry approach develops your capability to define problems in learning and teaching, then elaborate on them and propose scholarly solutions. The pedagogy supports collaboration and independent, self-directed inquiry across various topics discussed in the program enabling the capacity to initiate, plan, implement and evaluate broad functions within varied specialized technical and/or creative contexts. Specifically, you will be able to identify, plan, implement and evaluate significant ideas transforming higher education, course design, assessment, blended learning, work-integrated learning and a scholarly investigation of interest. You will apply current thinking in learning and teaching creatively in all program courses.

The Capstone Project

The final course of the program is a Capstone Project that allows you to investigate learning and teaching in a course of interest in a scholarly community. Capstone projects provide you with a choice but must represent a real-world problem that results in a project that you can complete within a semester. You may focus on any aspect of learning and teaching, provided the project connects theory and practice, and aims to improve the student learning environment at RMIT, whether on campus, online or in a WIL-related setting. The course will provide you with support in project planning, research skills, and the writing and presenting of the capstone report. You will constructively peer review each other's work and offer helpful suggestions throughout the semester.
