Purpose of the Program

The Bachelor of Design (Games) BP214VRH, focuses on the development and creative generation of games in tandem with research appropriate to artists, designers, and developers. You will gain a deep and critical understanding of games in multiple formats and develop a wide range of art, design, and technical skills in order to foster your creativity and working knowledge.

The objectives of the program are to:

  • Immerse you in a collaborative, creative games development and research culture with an emphasis on teamwork, critical reflection, and community-minded study.
  • Give you deep experience with art and design for games, including concept art, level design, and gameplay balancing.
  • Give you expansive creative control of complete game projects in order to go beyond technical mastery and build up a creative folio of professional games production.
  • Equip you with a critical language for researching games and embedding research throughout your creative practice.

The program has a capstone project (OART1092 Game Design Studio 6) with the intention that you will leave with a functional game outcome/artefact produced in a team environment creatively driven by you, but advised and curated by academic and professional staff.

The program is also designed as a pathway to further learning including related Masters programs such as the Master of Games, Animation, and Interactivity. Game studies and broader games research is embedded throughout the degree and is an important differentiator of the program's graduates.

RMIT Bachelor of Design (Games) graduates are distinct in the workplace because they have experienced a focused and yet flexible creative games program. You will develop highly advanced game projects, sometimes and ideally for public consumption, while specialising in your chosen area such as concept art, game narratives, or character creation. In the final year of your studies, there is the opportunity to choose to complete an industry-based internship.

As a graduate of the program, you will be ready to adapt to a global games employment context, and particularly prepared for independent game production for digital and mobile marketplaces. Graduate employment opportunities have included game-specific careers in level design, concept art and illustration, game writing, game engine scripting, 3D modeling, and many others.  Other successful graduates have developed successful and sustainable independent businesses in games for health, games for business, 3D visualisation, dynamic web design, and many more.

The delivery of this program is blended comprising of face-to-face learning supplemented by online learning

External accreditation and industry links

In Vietnam, there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit programs in games.

The program has strong links with industry through the Industry Advisory Committee, which consists of senior academic staff from within the School and external industry professionals from games development and related industries. They advise the School in facilitating a program that is relevant to the roles of games design and the creative industries both nationally and internationally.

Graduates of this program have successfully gained employment in games, animation, simulation, exhibition design and other related creative industries over a period of five years and are successfully working in Singapore, England, USA, India, New Zealand and Canada.

Students of the Bachelor of Design (Games) are eligible for student membership to the International Games Developers Association (IGDA), a not-for-profit organisation globally serving individuals who create videogames.
