RMIT connects innovation districts in Barcelona and Melbourne

A delegation of leaders from the City of Melbourne recently visited Barcelona's innovation and technology zone as part of the planning for a similar district in the Australian city.

The mutual interests of both cities in knowledge sharing and technology districts saw the Melbourne-based team meet with their counterparts from the City of Barcelona to discuss opportunities for collaboration across the zones. 

RMIT is a key contributor to the innovative urban spaces in both cities. 

The University recently relaunched its RMIT Europe operations in Barcelona's innovation zone known as 22@ – a twist on the original zone classification 22a. 

And in Melbourne, RMIT is partnering with the City of Melbourne and Melbourne University for the creation of an urban innovation district that is set to drive investment in the knowledge economy and shape the city’s future.

The group of leaders from both city councils met at the heart of the 22@ zone in the landmark Media-TIC Building – a building designed by Spanish architect and RMIT Adjunct Professor Enric Ruiz Geli.

It's also the new location for RMIT Europe's offices and learning and teaching spaces.

RMIT Europe's Executive Director Marta Fernandez said the meeting of the two cities involved a collaborative discussion on areas of common interest such as planning controls, governance models, district growth, activity programming and citizen participation. 

"The group also enjoyed a walking tour of the area and had the opportunity to visit some of the city's business incubation and acceleration facilities.

"We are looking forward to facilitating future discussions between the two cities as well as working together to identify opportunities for collaboration across research and development," she said.
