Overview

According to the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), it’s estimated that cyber security incidents cost Australian businesses $29 billion each year.

Cyber security is the practice of protecting systems, networks, and programs from digital or cyber attacks. These attacks generally focus on accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive individual or business information, in order to extort money or interrupt business procedures for personal gain.

With the enhanced sophistication of cyber crimes and increasing number of incidents each year, now is the best time to develop your capabilities and commence a highly sought after, value adding career within cyber security.

Australian Student Visas

RMIT's online Graduate Certificate does not meet Australian student visa requirements. For an Australian student visa, you must have an on-campus place in a program of study.

Details

Our Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security will provide you with an understanding of cyber security fundamentals and programming, preparing you for a practical role within the industry.

With a strong career focus, you’ll also be exposed to thought leadership from a range of cyber security professionals and complete mock job applications.

In this graduate certificate, you will complete four subjects:

  • Structures of Cyberspace
  • Programming Fundamentals
  • An Introduction to Information Security, and
  • Case Studies in Cyber Security.

In Structures of Cyberspace, you'll learn how to apply abstract thinking to cyberspace scenarios and navigate through the language and other dimensions of cyber security to expand your knowledge, skills and application. You'll also learn how to communicate abstract ideas using text, symbols and diagrams, perform simple calculations and collaborate within a small team.

In Programming Fundamentals, you'll analyse simple computing problems, devise suitable algorithmic solutions, and code these algorithmic solutions in a computer programming language. Finally, yo’ll learn how to develop maintainable and reusable solutions using the object-oriented paradigm.

In An Introduction to Information Security, you'll acquire a practical overview of the issues involved in information security and assurance. This subject will also take you through the application and skills required to study further concepts in information security. You'll also communicate and interpret ideas related to the principles of information security.

In your final subject, Case Studies in Cyber Security, you'll devise and discuss information security risks and challenges encountered in modern information security applications. You'll also learn how to identify professional careers or postgraduate research opportunities in information security. Focus will also be on work practice and group dynamics theory relevant to the interdisciplinary and people-centred nature of information security. Finally, you'll learn how to communicate both technical and non-technical material in various forms to a variety of audiences.

Graduates of this program are also able to articulate into RMIT’s on-campus Masters of Cyber Security, and are also eligible to apply for work experience placements with the Australian Defence Force Cyber Gap Program.

In order to apply, you must be studying an eligible 12-month program.

Students of this course can expect 10-12 hours study per subject per week, with each term comprising of 10 weeks.

In this graduate certificate, you will complete four subjects: Structures of Cyberspace, Programming Fundamentals, An Introduction to Information Security, and Case Studies in Cyber Security.

Cyberspace refers to the hardware, software, algorithms, and protocols of digital communication. The ability to employ abstract thinking towards any problems within cyberspace is foundational to any cyber security professional. In this course, you’ll learn the mathematical tools and language needed to describe and interpret structures of cyberspace.

Programming skills represent a generic problem-solving ability and are considered essential for anyone involved in the development and maintenance of software systems. Programming skills are also vital for analysing software vulnerabilities, identifying malicious software, and other tasks required for cyber security analysts. This programming fundamentals course will introduce you to foundational knowledge of computer systems, software interactions, conceptual building blocks for programming, and basic computer programming.

In Introduction to Information Security, you’ll get an overview of data and computer security and concentrate on technical and continuity management issues. The basic information security objectives such as data integrity, identification, message authentication, authorisation, validation and access control are examined. Cryptographic techniques and the basic philosophy of key management is also introduced. The ideas behind behind hacking, cracking and social engineering will be discussed in the context of ethics and their place in information security.

In your last course, Case Studies in Cyber Security, you’ll be able to apply the knowledge and skills obtained to study further concepts in information security, communicate and interpret ideas related to information security, and work in small groups.

Career

As a graduate of the Online Graduate Certificate in Cyber Security, you'll have a detailed understanding of cyber security fundamentals and programming, preparing you for a practical role within the industry.

Graduates can transition into roles such as penetration testers, IT security engineers, security architects, IT security consultants, and more.
