Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish and work with young people within the current context, philosophy and values of the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) sector.  This unit applies to youth workers who come in contact with clients affected by alcohol and other drugs.

Classes where information is shared through talks and group discussions, and exercises are conducted to apply learning. Time in class, will also be spent working on applied assessment tasks.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Research and Evaluation Task that allows the student to demonstrate their ability to critically evaluate informatioon relevant to AOD in the outh sector whilst also being able to provide reputable information to clients where required. There are three parts to this task - Evaluate information from a client, Provide reputable information to a client and Research AOD Frameworks

Assessment Task 2: Three Case Studies that allow the student to demonstrate that they have the ability to work with clients that have alcohol and drug issues in a way that is consistent with the youth sector. There are 15 questions that relate to drug use and drug interactions, harm minimisation strategies, personal attitudes and beliefs, person centred interventions and suitable treatment methods.

Assessment Task 3: An online quiz that allows students to demonstrate that they understand specific contexts for AOD in youth work and the values and philosophies of the sector. They student will demonstrate an understanding of the legal and ethical considerations in youth work along with the rights and responsibilities of workers and clients

Assessment Task 4: Two role plays that will allow the student to demonstrate that they understand how to work in an AOD context. The student will play the role of a support worker.

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills to a standard expected in the workplace. To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.
