Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge needed to access and integrate foundation skills resources, strategies and advice in vocational training and assessment.

The unit applies to vocational education and training (VET) teachers, trainers and assessors who use a range of technical and training competencies to support the foundation skill needs of learners and candidates in vocational training and assessment. Foundation skills include the core skills and employability skills described by current authorised Australian foundation skill frameworks. Core skills include digital literacy, learning, reading, writing, oral communication, and numeracy skills. Employability skills include skills such as initiative and enterprise, planning and organising, problem solving, self-management, and teamwork.

This unit does not include the competencies used by experienced VET teachers, trainers and assessors to lead the development of foundation skill support.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Details of Learning Activities

This unit within the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment describes the skills and knowledge needed to access and integrate foundation skills resources, strategies and advice in vocational training and assessment. The unit applies to vocational education and training (VET) teachers, trainers and assessors who use a range of technical and training competencies to support the foundation skill needs of learners and candidates in vocational training and assessment. Foundation skills include the core skills and employability skills described by current authorised Australian foundation skill frameworks. Core skills include digital literacy, learning, reading, writing, oral communication, and numeracy skills. Employability skills include skills such as initiative and enterprise, planning and organising, problem solving, self-management, and teamwork. You will participate in learning activities such as: analysis of case studies and scenarios, role plays, developing learning programs, developing lesson strategies group discussions and working in groups. Other activities will include: online research, and reading articles provided by your trainer.

At RMIT Work Integrated Learning (WIL) refers to opportunities for you to experience either real or simulated workplaces within your program. WIL activities in this program include:

• Simulations of training and assessment work environments
• Work based projects completed within your own workplace.

Many students who undertake this program are already employed in a training and assessment role. Some assessment activities are conducted in a workplace and you are encouraged to use your own workplaces for this. If you do not have a workplace please consult your trainer about alternative arrangements.

  • accessing and using foundation skill resources in training at least once
  • accessing and using foundation skill training strategies in training at least once
  • seeking and acting on foundation skill advice from a colleague with skills, knowledge and experience in foundation skills at least once during training or assessment.

Assessment Tasks

A comprehensive assessment document with all requirements will be provided at the commencement of classes and uploaded to the Canvas shell. This section will just provide a high-level summary of the assessment tasks. Due dates for assessment tasks are dependent on access to facilities and equipment. Assessment Task One: Access and use foundation skill strategies and
advice.

Part A: Knowledge Questions 

You will be required to answer a series of questions to demonstrate your knowledge of uplifting foundational skills. 

Part B: Case Study 

Using the skills you have developed throughout your classes you will apply your knowledge towards a specific scenario developing instructional and assessment based support for foundational skill areas.

Assessment Task Two: Use foundation skill strategies in training and assessment

You must train and assess a vocational training topic with at least 2 learners and: both deliver training and conduct one (1) assessment activity— we recommend allowing at least 60 minutes to do both. Identify at least one (1) foundation skill that learners will need to successfully engage in training and meet assessment requirements then: integrate at least one (1) strategy to help learners develop and consolidate this foundation skill during training:integrate at least one (1) strategy to meet foundation skill needs in assessment, while maintaining integrity of the assessment. Use at least one (1) learning or assessment resource that has been customised to meet learners’ foundation skill needs.
