Course Description

This course introduces the key technical and organisational skills needed to create live productions for screen industries including television & film. Productions include studio and location based small and large crew styles and involves collaborations with a wide range of production crew.

1.1 Confirm key objectives and scope of productions with required personnel

1.2 Determine resources according to production requirements

1.3 Develop realistic expenditure estimates that meet budget allocations

1.4 Identify potential budget overruns and resolve or recommend alternatives

1.5 Monitor and evaluate planning process against production requirements

1.6 Develop action plans for realising productions

1.7 Develop contingency plans to minimise the impact of unexpected events on productions

1.8 Finalise action plans and budget, and amend documentation as required

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this course, you will be able to create productions for screen industries including television & film having learnt to:

  • Write a program brief, script and rundown
  • Hold pre production meetings
  • Create floor and lighting plans
  • Liaise and communicate with a production crew 
  • Observe safe work procedures
  • Use technical knowledge to produce a segment


Details of Learning Activities

In class activities will include a range of teacher directed group activities, projects, class exercises, review discussions/lectures and independent project based work.

Out-of-class activities include completion of individual design and pre-production work, preparation for class presentations and location excursions/production work. Online research and occasional outside of class time group discussions will be required to maintain project work.

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights to your written tasks. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS. 


Assessment Tasks

To demonstrate competency in this course you will need to complete the following assignments to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assignments and once you have demonstrated competency you will also receive a result after your final assignment.

Assessments

  • Production1o3 "Picture Me!" - Co -produce a three minute live segment. 
  • Production2o3 "Create, Plan, Pitch!" - Produce an action plan including program brief and budget for your own production idea. 
  • Production3o3: "It's Show Time!" -  Co-Producer [Producer/Production Manager/TechnicalProducer] for at least one program.

You should refer to the assignment brief which is available on Canvas for full assessment criteria.
