Course Description

In this course you will develop the skills and knowledge required to apply work health and safety (WHS) requirements, including implementing safe work practices, participating in risk assessment and control, and following emergency procedures in the creative industries.

The course applies to those who are required to identify their individual WHS responsibilities and implement procedures to work safely in creative industry work contexts.

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Comply with WHS regulations and federal, state or territory legislation requirements for workplace operations, including duty of care
  • Comply with WHS communication processes, information and documentation procedures
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of OHS committees and representatives, the meaning of common safety signs and symbols, and procedures for reporting hazards, incidents and injuries
  • Communicate and work safely with others
  • Follow general procedures for responding to incidents and emergencies, including evacuation, first aid, fire safety equipment and PPE
  • Explain the consequences of non-compliance with WHS policies and procedures.


Details of Learning Activities

In class activities will include a range of teacher directed group activities, projects, class exercises, review discussions/lectures and independent project based work.

Out-of-class activities include completion of individual design and pre-production work, preparation for class presentations and location excursions/production work. Online research and occasional outside of class time group discussions will be required to maintain project work.

Control room safety briefing: Vision Mixer, EVS and Director, [DA] Directors Assistant, Graphics, Autocue and Technical direction. Correct posture, chair settings and breaks from being seated.


Practical safety operation:  Setting Lighting, staging, camera positions and Audio equipment for practice runs.

  • Safety1of2: Implement Safety procedures for your 'Picture Me' production. Due Weeks 6, 7, 8 Semester 1
  • Safety2of2: Complete Safety Knowledge and associated quiz questions. Due Week 14.
