Overview

The Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication is designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of marketing communication concepts and practices in business.

The units you’ll study cover a broad range of topics applicable to the marketing and communications industry, giving you insight and skills in the following areas of study:

  • consumer insight and target audience profiling
  • media planning and buying
  • digital media applications and software
  • creative and persuasive communications
  • presentations and preparation of marketing documents
  • website marketing and video production.

Drawing on RMIT’s links to industry, you will be taught by experts, and learn and apply the latest software and platforms to implement solutions in business practices and industry.

The transferable skills you learn in this certificate will prepare you for the advertising, marketing and communications industries, or can be directly applied to your own business.

With this broad understanding of the marketing and communications industry, you will be able to pursue a role in industry, government or non-government sectors, enhance your existing business, or study further for a more in-depth understanding and application with the Diploma of Marketing and Communication.

Learning and teaching

Classes are interactive and will provide opportunities for you to discuss ideas, practise new skills, participate in group discussions and group work, and contextualise theory through industry-relevant scenarios and case studies.

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, workshops and client presentations. Students are provided with a variety of different assessment types that allow them to apply the course concepts including group discussions, case studies and work integrated learning with real-world clients. This is supported by online activities such as blogs, discussion boards, quizzes and wikis to further enhance learning.

Assessment methods

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes essays, reports, presentations, group and individual projects, case studies, client projects, tests and work-simulated projects.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

Guiding the development of the College of Business, both nationally and internationally, is an Industry Advisory Board of high-profile executives. The Board creates a strategic bridge between the latest in technology and design thinking and business.

This certificate has been developed by RMIT’s College of Business with extensive input from industry to ensure your learning prepares you effectively for current and future industry needs.

Professionals from the marketing and communication industry will speak in your classes to enhance your knowledge of the industry and give context to the theory and concepts you learn.

You will also complete work-integrated learning projects during the semester, completing assessable tasks in the workplace, working with organisations to solve real marketing communication problems or working on community-based projects.

This practical experience will complement your theoretical knowledge and enhance your communication, problem-solving and self-management abilities to meet workplace expectations.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this qualification and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

You will study six core subjects and six electives covering marketing and communications themes including:

  • developing and delivering presentations
  • advertising, production and marketing activities
  • understanding consumers
  • communicating effectively
  • preparing digital content for a website

  • IELTS (Academic): minimum overall band of 5.5 (with no individual band below 5.0)
  • TOEFL (Internet Based Test - IBT): minimum overall score of 50 (with minimum of 5 in Reading, 5 in Listening, 14 in Speaking and 15 in Writing)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE (A)): minimum score of 42 (with no communication band less than 36)
  • C1 Advanced: minimum of 162 with no less than 154 in any component.

Undertaking a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree can help you meet the entry requirements for your preferred degree. These qualifications often provide credit, reducing the duration of your bachelor degree.

Even though there are no formal pathways into this course, there are often other ways you can gain entry.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2025 is $365.

You may be entitled to apply for a fee concession or exemption if you are in a Victorian Government subsidised place and you meet the eligibility criteria.
